BF after EPing: huge spit up

Long story short: lazy eater led to exclusive pumping for ten weeks. Today I decided to try bf again. We've been in bed all day and he's eaten a couple of times from the breast. Every time, milk leaks out the side of his mouth, and then when he's done he spits up a huge amount and burps a lot. It's encouraging that he seems to be getting full but we're talking 6 minutes of nursing leading to spit up like in the picture. I'm going to do a weighted feed at the lactation clinic tomorrow to see how much he's getting, but for now, any thoughts on what could be going on? He's had wet and dirty diapers today and refuses the bottle after nursing so I don't think he's starving. I guess I might be freaking out over nothing but I'd love any opinions.

Tongue or lip tie ? I forget if you've brought this up in the September board. Recognize your picture . Lazy eater sounds like it's hard work for him to eat which could be from a tie. Also it leads to not getting a good seal and hence taking in a lot of air. I'm actually looking to start pumping instead of nursing because even after revision she's usually lazy most of the time now especially because she had bottles for supplementing. Does he curl in his upper lip? Or is it flanged out. Just an idea... Not able to really diagnos anything

If you have been pumping lots, you might have a ton of milk that rushes out... aka oversupply.

Two different ibclc's and my pediatrician have said there are no tongue or lip ties that would interfere with breastfeeding. We have a referral for an ent that we are waiting to be approved. I've noticed that he does have an upper lip tie and his lip sometimes doesn't flange out with a bottle, but I thought it might just be getting stuck on the rubber. I've also noted that he doesn't have a good rhythm when eating and often leaks milk when bottle feeding too. He was given bottles in the hospital while I slept after emergency surgery and I think that contributed. As of this afternoon he's refusing to latch and just wailing until I give him a bottle.

@callistosmile you're right lip-tongue ties don't interfere with breastfeeding, but they do lead to difficulty in comfortably breastfeeding. There is a distinction.

Sounds like ties. We were told by multiple IBCLC's and the Ped that my son wasn't tied. Saw an ENT at 8 weeks who diagnosed and did the procedure. It was a huge difference.

DD spits up more after BF than after bottles. Think it's a combination of the fast flow of my oversupply and the fact that there's no regulation of how much she can take in on the breast so she tends to overeat. Doctor says not to worry since she's gaining weight appropriately. It's probably nothing. Try to keep LO upright for 15 minutes or so after feeds and make sure to get him to burp.
