Ear piercing

What's the verdict about when you can get ears pierced? Not in a rush but I'm curious to find out what others have been told by their pediatrician. Mine said "wait until they ask" and then said wait until 6 month shots at least. They don't offer that on peds office but said we could go to the mall. That makes me a bit reluctant so will probably not be doing it anytime soon.

  • My mom got mine done when I was young, a year or so I believe. They used baby studs on me and the posts were too short, my skin was trying to heal over the front of the earrings because they were just too small for my ears; made for a pretty cranky child from what I'm told ;)
I then got them done when I was nine or so. If you decide to do it, an actual piercer at a tattoo shop is your best bet, they just have way more knowledge. The guns they use at the mall cause unnecessary trauma to the tissue (wish I would have known that before I got my upper ear done with a gun, shattered cartilage doesn't heal very well!)
  • My parents had mine done at 6 months. I was told that any time after their 4 month vaccinations is fine. I had a friend who did her baby's around 4 months. She said she barely made a fuss. And because she was so little when they were done, she doesn't notice they are there so she doesn't pull or tug at them (she is now 18 months.) My neice on the other hand was 8 when she had hers done. They were constantly infected because she was always touching them and not cleaning them properly. They ended up closing up because my in-laws were tired of dealing with it. She just didn't take care of them even with adult help. I plan to do my LO somewhere between the 4-6 month mark. If she doesn't like them when she is older, she can always take them out.
  • I am waiting to get LO's ears pierced because of allergies. My grandmother was allergic to nickel and so am I. I have to be careful wearing any type of jewelry. I had my ears pierced in middle school and ended up having an allergic reaction to what we're supposed to be hypoallergenic earrings. I had to go to the ER to have the earring removed because of swelling. I don't want to take the chance until I find out if she has the same allergy.
  • We had DD1 done at 6 months at the mall. Knowing what I know now, I'll take this one to a tattoo parlor probably around the same age.

  • I already had my dd's done at 2 months old.
  • I've heard 6 months. I didn't want to deal with one more thing while having a baby so we waited until they asked. DD1 was 4 and DD2 was 2.5 when they asked so we got them done at the same time. I'll wait again with DD3.

  • Definitely go to a tattoo parlor where they are required a certain level of sanitation/sterilization . The ones in the mall can't be trusted too well when you have a teenager running the show that doesn't really care about cleanliness and what not! I got an infection when i was 18 getting a simple piercing at Claire's.
  • My mother had mine done very early and they pierced them with hoops (you're not supposed to) and I pulled one out and swallowed it. I was sitting in my car seat and choked so just be careful of the ear pulling. My X-ray is pretty cool though lol
  • Many pedi's pierce ears, FYI.

  • My DD's ped said they can be done as early as 2 months and gave me a number of another ped who does it. I'm going to take her after Christmas and get them done so she is used to them at this age and won't mess with them. My niece got hers done as a baby and they healed well and doesn't notice them. Then my other niece who is 4 has both ears infected because she pulls at them and is constantly touching them. I think it's all up to the person.
  • I have a boy so it's not as much of a concern for me, but if I had a girl I wouldn't be getting it done until she was older, probably at least first grade if not later. My mom never let me get my ears pierced; I finally went out and got them pierced when I was 18 and didn't tell her, lol. She also didn't let me shave my legs either for fear I might cut myself so I bought myself a razor and hid it. I was a bit sheltered due to having a worry-wart as a mom ;) I would never make my kid wait that long, but I want it to be their decision and something that she'll remember as a fun memory. I also would want my kid to be at an age where they're capable of taking care of the cleaning themselves.

Personally I never understood the baby ear piercing thing, but to each their own! I also know in some cultures it's much more common (for instance, in Mexico, they will pierce baby's ears the day after they're born at the hospital).
  • My parents did mine when I was a couple months old. They healed great and no infections. My son is 3 months old- if he were a girl I'd go do them now.
  • I don't have a little girl, but I think I'd probably get it done for her early if I did. I've gotten my ears pierced probably 4 or more times in my life, and it always closed up on me if I took my earrings out overnight even months later. I can't get them pierced anymore because the old hole is always like randomly turning into a pimple or something weird and gross. I'll never be able to wear earrings now, and I've always wished my family had gotten them done when I was little so that my body could've already accepted it.
  • I'm not getting my little ones done until she asks me ... I'm not one to judge but personally, I think it's a choice the kid should make so that's what I'm doing.
