Swaddle for naps?

I'm currently thinking of moving our LO daytime naps to her crib. Right now her current sleep situation (3 weeks) is she naps in her swing during the day or in her rock n play or in my arms, all unswaddled but will have a muslin blanket thrown over her legs. For night time sleep she sleeps in a bassinet by our bed and swaddled in a swaddleme.

We haven't tried to put her down in the crib yet for sleeping but thought it might be worth the try now. My question is - do you swaddle your LO for daytime naps if they are in a crib? I'm worried that we have started to associate swaddling with her nighttime routine so worried that adding that in the daytime might throw that association off for bedtime. Maybe we should use this time to try out a sleep sack instead?

Just wondering your thoughts and experiences on this!

Re: Swaddle for naps?

  • My LO is still napping on me or in the swing. If he were napping in his crib I would either swaddle or make sure he were wearing layers. Otherwise, I'm afraid he would wake up because he's cold.
  • Loading the player...
  • You could use a sleep sack, that way they are warm but not swaddled and if you get the ones that zip on the bottom it will make diaper changes a breeze.
  • We almost always swaddle LO for naps/ at night.  We generally keep him in the pack n play during the day/ evening and in the crib at night, but there's no set rule- right now he's napping in the crib (almost 4pm) with a swaddle.

  • My pediatrician recommended not swaddling during the day. He said they need to have their arms and legs free to stretch out and promote development. Luckily, my LO sleeps fine during the day without it.
  • Awesome question! We're only a week in but doing the same thing. Personally I just like holding / wearing her for naps to give her head a break. I've put her in the crib swaddled for a nap in the afternoon though and it doesn't seem to ruin her routine. Who knows, though. :)
  • My lo isn't in his crib yet, but we only swaddled for naps during the day the first two weeks. Now during the day I put him in a fleece sleep blanket/sleepsack which he seems to love and only swaddle at night time.

  • We only swaddle at night. I like her being able to stretch during the day and the swaddling has become part of our night ritual.
  • I was ready to swaddle but my LO does not need it to sleep nicely, so I just trust her to stay calm
  • Sometimes I swaddle, sometimes I don't. She really likes to stretch out but her little wrists get cold when she's not swaddled (she has long sleeves on and little cotton mittens but there's always a gap between her mittens and sleeves so that skin is exposed). Anyone else have a baby that isn't swaddled and has cold arms? Any advice?

We don't use mittens, but there are a few outfits/onesies she got that have fold over mittens on the sleeves. Maybe get some of those?

I have a bunch of the long sleeve Carter's onesies, they have the fold over hand covers on the sleeves. This works great in our drafty rowhome, and expect bc lo doesn't like having his arms tucked in or swaddled.

I had those but she grew out of newborn size, and I haven't seen anything in the 0-3mo or larger sizes that cover the whole hand. That worked great though so thanks for the suggestion - I'll have to keep looking!

You could try a sleep sack. Since they're 0-9 month, the sleeves are really long. My LO always ends up pulling his arms into the sleeves so his hands aren't showing

What brand do you use? The Halo sleep sacks I have are sleeveless!
  • Interested to know which brand also. We have tried the halo sleeveless sack but it is HUGE on her. And she's a BIG baby!

Newborns tend to have poor circulation so their hands and feet feel colder to the touch. I don't think it means they are necessarily cold. Even in fleece footie PJs my guy's feet will feel a little chilly but he doesn't seem to care.
    We don't do gloves either.

I believe they're just carters child of mine. They're fleece just like halo but have arms.

ETA it looks like carter's calls them sleep bags instead of sleep sacks
