Middle Name Help (girl)

We are trying to decide/agree on a middle name for our DD2. Our DD1 has a family name as a middle name that is on both sides of the family. While that's ideal for DD2, it's proving to be harder, so ultimately we just want it to be a family name. The first name is not finalized, but right now we have it down to Elizabeth ("Eliza"), which is our front runner, and Alexandra. I'm also trying to keep Bridget in the running. :)

Right now the three middle name options are:
  1. Lucye/Lucille. My mom is Lucye (that spelling) and his grandmother was Lucille. I prefer Lucye and he prefers Lucille. I think Lucille tends to flow better, but his grandmother passed away a long time before he was born so there's no real connection. I would rather give our daughter the name of someone she will either have a connection with or he/I have a connection to. His dad never speaks of his mother so my husband doesn't know anything about her. To me that's the point of using a family name, but maybe I am wrong? My mom is hugely active in our lives and my husband is also very close to her. So, the question is - which one of these - or would you go with some other form/spelling of this name to compromise? Lucie, Lucia?
  2. Blake. My uncle's middle name who has passed. I was very close to him. I would love to name a child after him or his mom (my grandma). Both have passed but were HUGE parts of my life and, while not blood, they were closer than family. My grandma doesn't have a name we can really use. We like the flow of Blake with both of our name choices, but we lose having a name from both sides.
  3. Marie. My great aunt's middle name. My middle name is her first name. There's a strong connection. I do feel that this is a "filler" middle name, but it does have family meaning and is pretty.
Thank you!! This is hard - the middle name was what was easy the first go-round! :)

Re: Middle Name Help (girl)

  • All great names, I like Blake with both Elizabeth and Alexandra. I understand not honoring both sides, Lucy (however you choose to spell it) I think could work with Alexandra but honestly not my favorite. If you want to keep Bridget in the running, I like Bridget Marie.

  • I would go with option 1. Personally I'd pick Lucille, as Lucy is often a diminutive of it, or you could go for any of the variants of Lucia, where both Lucy and Lucille come from.

  • I would use Lucye over Lucille, because you have more connection with your child. I wouldn't use that spelling for a fn but think it's fine for a mn.

I think boys' names for girls' middle names is getting very overdone (James, Ryan, Blake), but I like Blake, because of the family significance.

Marie is just too boring/filler for me.
  • I like Blake for the family significance.

  • Thank you all for the responses so far!

I really love Blake. Normally I would not pick a masculine name, but for the family significance and the fact that the first name options are very feminine, I like it a lot.

However, I know that Lucye/Lucille will work best to honor both families. Would it make sense to use something like Lucie that sort of combines the spellings (although same pronunciation as Lucye), or would you just pick one or the other? I love Lucia, but I'm not sure it works well with the first names.
  • I like Blake and think it sounds good with either Elizabeth or Alexandra.

  • Blake is ok but if you use Lucye/Lucille spell it in the middle of the two. Lucie or something.
  • Elizabeth Marie is beauriful and elegant

Blake is a name i cant stand, especially on a girl

Lucille is a fine name i just think there are too many L sounds when paired with elizabeth
