1st Trimester

Visitor with a question..

Hi all, just stopping through from TTC with a question for a friend. She is 11 weeks and had blood work 3 weeks ago and an ultrasound. Everything looked good. She was supposed to schedule more blood work for this week and forgot. When they called to make an appointment, they asked her to go in for another ultrasound along with it. I don't remember having 2 ultrasounds in the 1st trimester and neither does she (we both already have 1 child, mine is 5 hers is 4). Is this a new thing? Two ultrasounds in the 1st tri? Her appointment isn't until tomorrow and she's really anxious. Thank you!

  • Just noticed how dead this board is. I'll be posting it on one of the bmb's too.

  • Is she over 35 or considered high risk in any way? I'm under 35 and not high risk, I had an US at 8 wks to confirm the pregnancy and then my first trimester screening ultrasound at 12 weeks. So while every doc is different, I don't think it's out of the norm to have 2 first tri ultrasounds... I think it's mostly Doctor preference unless they specified that it's due to a problem
  • I had an ultrasound at 8 weeks and another one at 12 weeks. The first was to verify a viable pregnancy (not ectopic, etc..) and to use for dating/EDD. Second was the standard first trimester scan where they did a bunch of measurements. My ultrasound tech even made a prediction of the sex based on what she could see and measure. (She was right)

  • With out knowing what the U/s are for, we really can't help you.
If your friend has questions regarding her medical care, she should direct them to her Provider.
    Thank God for Raid.

  • I had an US at 8 & 12 weeks. I'm not high risk or anything it's just how they did it for me
  • Every office does it differently. I'm not high risk but I did have a MMC last April. So I thought I would be in store for more frequent us. However my first scan was at 5 weeks 6 days and my next won't be until around 18 weeks when they do the anatomy scan. I've seen other women who have them weekly (usually due to risk, previous loss, or advanced maternal age) and others who have 2-4 in the first trimester. I truly believe in some cases it is doctors preference/practice.

First, I think she should contact her doctor. The scheduling staff should be able to see in the system exactly what she's supposed to be scheduled for and can give her an answer instantly.

Second, every office is different. If an OB has an u/s machine in-house, I think more frequent scans are common.

Third, bloodwork+ultrasound sounds like an NT screening. Perhaps she agreed to that and forgot.
  • Every doctor is different. My doctor does an U/S at 7 weeks and again at 11 weeks plus an additional scan for NT around 12 weeks.
