3rd Trimester

Discouraged...

So I will be 40wks on Friday - had my OB appt today, checked at 1/50/-3...been this way for 3wks!! I know these don't necessarily mean JACK, but my lack of ANY progress is really becoming discouraging. This is my second, and I really thought I'd progress more quickly...I am doing EVERYTHING: spicy food, looooong walks, sex, red raspberry leaf tea, using a birth-ball...just started EPO tonight (orally AND vaginally).
Ive had lots of BHs lately...but no real contrax...no loss of mucus plug...no nothing.
Any of you been in the same boat and had labor start on its own before the 42wk point??? I'm wanting an unmedicated, no-intervention birth...but I'm starting to get anxious and feel like that possibility may be slipping away...

Re: Discouraged...

  • It'll happen. I've had one of my sons decide to want out the night before I was scheduled to be induced. Another, was a day or two before. Just hang in there and don't tire yourself out because soon enough he/she will decide they want out and you'll need to not be exhausted. I know it's hard and the time seems to just drag by but like I said, hang in there!

  • It's not over until it's over! A lot can happen in two weeks!

  • I was 1cm and that's it right up until I went into labor at 40w2d with my first. I didn't progress at all or have any symptoms until it was go time. So a lot can happen in a couple days!
  • I was not even a fingertip dilated at my appointment 3 days before going into labor at 39+6.  It'll happen when it happens.  There doens't have to be a big build up first.

My mom loves to tell the story that she went to the doctor on a Wednesday at 4pm when pregnant with me, he told her she had "at least" another week, and her water broke in bed at 8am Thursday morning.  Seriously, dilation before active labor is meaningless.

  • You're not even 40 weeks yet. Chill. Baby will come when baby is ready.

Yup, and this is why my midwife totally supported my decision to opt out of cervical checks. I'm 40+2 and no idea if I'm dilated at all. If nothing changes, it just stresses you out thinking "I'm not progressing!" when every body is different and some don't progress for a long time and then do it all at once, while others progress much more shortly. Has no real bearing on anything to know how dilated you are when you're not in active labor.
  • Yes - this was me with my 3rd. I had actually been 3cm at my 39w appt, and then at 40w I was back to "barely 1cm" and I was so upset. I didn't even know that it was possible to go backwards like that. I was still at 1cm the day before I gave birth at 41w. My water broke in the middle of the night without feeling a single contraction or ever seeing any plug or anything. I had no idea it was coming. Baby in my arms in 3 hours. It was awesome.

  • Try to not focus on the discouraged feeling. You are so close. This is the last little bit of time when that little baby is shared with nobody but you. Enjoy your last secret moments together before birth <3
