Clomid/femara question? Obgyn question also.

Hello everyone! I'm Kasey! I've been on here for a few weeks reading everyone's posts and thought I would say hello and also hope to get a couple of questions answered!
I'm 26 years old, husband 37. I have one step child that is 9. We have been trying for about a year now. I have PCOS and haven't had a period in a couple of years. I went to my obgyn and she ran a few labs which came back normal. She decided to put me on provera(to induce period), clomid, and metformin. I've done 3 rounds of this with no ovulation and I still haven't started my period on my own. So definitely no ovulation. Then she put me on femara and still no ovulation. I've spent over $300 in ovulation tests. My dr. Told me to call her after this last round of femara and I did. Got a call back from her nurse and said 'well the dr thinks you just didn't ovulate this month so we'll do another round'. Of course I didn't ovulate! I also read that after about 4 months of ovulation meds and you're not pregnant, the chances decline considerably. My dr also has not ran any other tests. No u/s or anything.

How long did any of you take clomid or femara and if it didn't work, did you decide to talk to your dr about trying something else? When did your dr or you decide to see a fertility specialist? I'm worried my obgyn isn't going to take another step towards helping me and will just keep giving me femara and hopes that it works.

I have to call my dr back to tell her to write me another prescription for provera so I was hoping to bring up my concerns about the femara but I'm not sure how without sounding like I'm not trusting her.

Please get to an RE. You shouldn't take fertility drugs from an OB. OBs are good are keeping pregnant. They generally suck at getting you pregnant. An RE is trained to get you pregnant. Have tou had an HSG to check your tubes and has your hubs had an SA?

@bsckgb7 thank you for the reply! No I haven't had a hsg. I do them for a living (I'm a radiologic technologist) and never had one. My husband hasn't had a SA done either. Do I have to have a doctor referral or can I just make an appointment with an RE?

^^I'm sure you figured this out, but pp meant to say you shouldn't take fertility drugs from an OB. I definitely agree you should get to an RE. Your wasting time, money, and emotional resources at this point with the OB. Trust me, you won't regret going to the RE. You'll also be able to see if and how your body is responding and will be able to time IC amazingly well. The RE will tell you exactly when to have sex. Good luck!!

@kaseylk - check with your insurance.  It depends on your policy whether you need a referral, but I agree with everyone else - go to a RE.  They will monitor you and if you don't ovulate, they will change things up. Good luck!

Thank everyone so much! I just like my obgyn a lot so I didn't want to go 'over her head' and make her feel like I didn't trust her but this is my body and my life. I will schedule an appointment with an RE soon!

@kaseylk I felt the same way. I felt almost like I was commenting in his ability as a doctor if I left, but I'm so glad I switched and have realized that is definite not true. I was taking Clomid unmonitored with him. I ovulate on my own, and it turns out I don't respond to Clomid ( still only 1 mature follicle even on 100 mg and it thinned my lining out). So, I was taking a drug that was actually only hurting me and reduced my chance of pregnancy to 1-2%. I think I'm more the exception than the rule with not reaponding, but a common side effect of Clomid is thinned lining. Best of luck to you!

All the Clomid in the world won't help if your tubes are blocked or if you husband has sperm issues.  You could be waisting time and money if there are other issues present.  I also second what riveridgional said, most OBs don't monitor you, so you have no away of knowing whether the drugs are doing any good (and they could be harming you).
