Infertility

Cautiously optimistic? Low beta hell.

edited November 2015 in Infertility
11/25, I went in for a blood test and received my beta results the same day. A measly 10.1! :( My nurse told me to be "cautiously optimistic" that numbers could double but that the chances are very slim for a viable pregnancy with such a low beta. I was prepared for a chemical pregnancy.
Thursday I experienced some spotting that kinda made me feel I was out, but then it just stopped. (Implantation bleeding???)
Yesterday I went in for my second beta, and I woke this morning to a message from my nurse, telling me that she didn't want to leave me hanging over the weekend and said that my numbers have increased "appropriately", and to give them a call on Monday to "discuss my next steps". Nothing was mentioned about taking another blood test on Sunday (after 48 hours). I'm so confused. Just wondering if anyone really thinks with a 10.1 beta my pregnancy could be viable, or should just prepare myself for another CP? Also, why in the world would I not be advised to take another blood test?

  • I'm not sure, nothing was mentioned. I wish I were able to call them back on the weekend. It would be so much easier than a full weekend off filled with anxiety. Honestly though, doubling would only bring my hcg to 20. Pretty scary number. I really just want to get another blood test anyway, just to be on the safe side. @riveridgional how are your numbers looking? Hope all is well!

  • My RE was closed when I called Friday (the day I found out). My HPT turned just as fast this morning too, but I am so nervous to have my beta test and the follow-up one. This really is worse than the 2ww!! I'm hoping I will be able to go in on Monday after I call. I'm pretty sure I will be able to. I had a lot of cramping since Wednesday night and it's kinda tapered off last night and barely anything today, so that worried me a little. Just trying not to overanalyze anything.

Have you taken an HPT to see if it shows BFP? Most HPTS are at 25 and I think some turn at 30. How many dpo are you? There was a girl on here not that long ago who started with a low beta, like 10, and she recently posted that she is still pregnant.

  • I actually have been getting faint positives. I stopped taking them after my first beta. I asked the nurse too how it was possible to get positives with such a low beta. She said the frers are really sensitive. You really make my feel better, I had never seen anyone who had as low a beta as me. Thanks!!

I think it's a great sign your tests are still turning quickly. I wouldn't overthink things or take anymore test, you'll just worry yourself. Monday is sooo close, just think, only one more day you have to drag through before you get news that could be potentially life changing. :) You'll look back and laugh at all the worries. Cramping could really be anything. Sometimes the egg just burrows a little further. FX you'll get even better news Monday!!

I got my positive earlier this week. The docs office said "if my number was too low they would repeat on Friday" (first draw was Tues). i was at 21.7 and they were happy and told me come back in a week. I even turned a digitial which is supposed to be 50hcg. How early did you test? How many DPO were you?? I have been taking the "weeks estimator" tests and they have been reassuring.
  • Hey ladies ... I am SO sorry yall are going through this . I was an anxious wreck when my beta was low and I wish I had stayed more calm . I know that seems impossible .

Ive read stories of people's numbers starting that low as well- it is not impossible ! One of my friends even had a low beta following IVF and had a pretty huge bleed she thought was her period . Turns out she burst a capillary (hence the bleeding ) and she is currently 13 weeks pregnant with a healthy baby boy . She gives me hope in what seems impossible !

Doctors really don't know everything . They are just practicing medicine . It's there job to tell us odds .. And yes the odds are not great with low betas but don't give up hope until they tell you it's time ! I'm praying and thinking of you both !! I hope you both get your sticky little beans !! I would demand a blood test asap ! I think that's bull they didn't have you come in before - don't they realize how much we go through ?! Ugh !!

  • @mskeenan @bsckgb7 thanks ladies. That's really reassuring. Sometimes it's nice to hear others experiences when you don't have answers for your own.
My beta was at 14dpo-or-16dpt. So, it's so weird that I even had spotting the day after. It's driving me nuts not knowing, and I'm so surprised they wouldn't want to keep checking my numbers if I'm still at risk. It is super frustrating.
Congrats on your BFP @bsckgb7 hopefully it's a sticky bean.
@mskeenan did your low numbers turn out positively? How low?

  • @alqizwik the spotting thing is odd ! Do you usually spot before your period ? I never do so that seems very strange !

Unfortunately for me my pregnancy was chemical back in September . They started at 15 , jumped to almost 30 and then leveled out in the 30s .

I wish I knew what my friends numbers were that had success . she had basically thrown in the towel on her pregnancy due to her low numbers and the nurses were already consoling her until they ran another test and her numbers shot up .

I'm really pulling for you !!!

  • Thank you! I actually had stopped taking my progesterone because I just wanted my period to come so I could start again. I was really content with moving forward, now I'm in a world of different emotions and worry.
I have never ever spotted. Even with my first CP, nothing. It was actually kind of weird, cause I've always started AF with blood, but I still assumed it was my period until the spotting stopped. The nurse said it could possibly be spotting from the progesterone, but I wasn't on it at that point. All of this seems a little bizzarre to me, I haven't found anyone else in my same position before. It definitely helps to hear other successful stories, though. I appreciate it.

Sorry about your loss. I hope this cycle is it for you!

  • @alquizwik - when did you stop taking the progesterone? Stopping it suddenly could've caused some spotting since that would've been a huge drop in your progesterone levels (especially if this was your first time taking progesterone). Have you talked to your nurse/doctor about stopping the progesterone? If there's a chance that this is a viable pregnancy (which it sounds like it might just be!), you might want to keep taking the progesterone (but I'm not a doctor, so don't feel like you have to listen to me).

Also, if you take a look at the numbers listed HERE you will see that the normal range for HCG at 4 weeks (from last menstrual period) starts at 5 and at 5 weeks (from LMP) it starts at 18. So if you are currently at a 20 and your LMP was 4 or 5 weeks ago, you're still in the "normal" range. Obviously nothing is for certain at this stage and I don't want to build up your hopes, but I'd say keep staying positive until you know more information. And I'd call your nurse/doctor and push for more testing (say it's for your own peace of mind - that always works with my doc :-)

I'll be thinking of you during this difficult time and praying that your little bean holds on!

  • @jilligan14 thanks for all the information! That makes me feel a little less nervous/worrisome. The doctors did ask me to continue the progesterone. I guess it could be a possibility the spotting was from the decrease in progesterone. I just assumed it would have been more red spotting like my period starting, but I do know spotting varies. I wish I could've gotten my levels done today, but it isn't what the doctor ordered :P so I'll just call them tomorrow and see what they say!
Thanks again for your advice! GL on your journey!
I agree @mskeenan I'll continue and see what they say Monday. I only have a few left and only would like to pay that extra $400 for the suppositories if I know there is still hope for my bean to stick! :)
