What are your thoughts on induction

Sorry for all the post I just am so close and as some of you are second time moms who have had natural and induced and c section births I want an insight on your experiences. As of Monday I am 40 weeks and my dr said its okay to go past your due date but the later I get into my pregnancy the more I'm worrying about my health and my Childs health because I am overweight and am considering induction but even though I've read up on everything it's just not the same as hearing it from someone who has actually gone threw it. I'm stuck between just waiting or asking to be induced can you ladies tell me your experiences so I can have a better idea of what I should do

Re: What are your thoughts on induction

  • I would take your doctors advise on this one. My first was born at 42+2 and was absolutely fine my second was 38+4 and also fine. If the doc is happy for you to go over then I personally wouldn't get induced, let baby cook for as long as it needs to and remember that due dates are estimates anyway! I'm sure they will monitor you closely and offer induction if needed.

  • I didn't really know people went that far passed the due date I thought it would be dangerous but it's good to know its normal im losing a lot of mucus so hopefully that's a good sign thank you

I asked to be induced with my second and third baby. I asked because I'm prone to deliver big babies for my size. I just wanted to make sure I had them vaginally and that they would fit. But I was already past my EDD with both. If you're worried about your health and your DR is on the same page then I would definitely decide to. I personally would not have been induced if I wasn't worried about their size.

The answer is different for everyone. Only you and your doctor can decide what's best for you and baby. Personally, if my health is ok and baby is doing well I wouldn't induce at 40weeks. I'd wait it out until baby is ready. If at any point baby's health is at risk, I'd go ahead with induction. As pp mentioned, due dates are merely estimates. They're not the end all be all to determine that baby is ready to be born.

Best of luck to you and your decision!

  • Its a common statistic that women who have inductions have to have even more interventions in their labour, I'm not saying all, but a lot. As I want to have a natural delivery, induction will be done at the last possible moment, so around 42 weeks if needed or unless a medical necessary and baby needs to be out sooner than later. This is a decision my midwife and I have decided together. Obviously I'm hoping I just go into labour naturally with no issues. :)
  • I really want to go into labor naturally but I am worried about his size and if the placenta works the same after 40 weeks next appointment me and my dr are definetly going over all options and risks and all
  • It's something that you need to decide. I'm high risk and I will be induced or whatever is best for my baby at the time. I'm having complications with my pregnancy, but I'm also a type 1 diabetic.
I was induced at 39 weeks with my DD. I had a picture perfect induction. Nothing went wrong and I had a vaginal delivery. I talked to my doctor and the nurses in L&D well before hand just to make sure I knew what the process is and how things are done. It just really depends on a lot of things.

  • My ob's practice will recommend induction at 41 weeks. At that point they think there's a higher risk with not getting the baby out than induction.
With my last, I had an induction at 41 week exactly. I had a text book induction minus some issue with my baby getting stuck due to his size. But I had a super easy and non complicated induction and epi. If I go to 41 weeks this time, I'll opt for induction again.

  • Listen to your doctor, but I think I'd only willingly get induced at 42 weeks. I just hate the idea of it.
    Good luck:)
  • I was induced at 42 with my first baby, went into labor naturally at 41 with my second. I can't even begin to describe how much more tolerable my second labor and delivery was. It's great that we have the ability to induce when necessary - it saves lives! But I would wait as long as my doctor would allow, personally!

  • The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) reports that 20 percent to 40 percent of labors are induced—a number that, along with C-section rates, has doubled in the last decade. A 2005 ACOG study determined that inducing first-time mothers was directly associated with an increased risk for C-section: The rate was 12 percent for spontaneous labor, 23.4 percent for medically indicated inductions and 23.8 percent for elective inductions.

  • OP listen to your doctor on this one. He knows a heck of a lot more than you or any of us!
  • Oh, FWIW, I was induced at 39 weeks with my first for medical reasons and had my second child med-free at 40 weeks and both labors were great. Babies were fine.
  • I had an induction with my 3rd, due to GD. It was very fast and intense but complication free. I didn't use any pain meds.

Personally I prefer the gradual build up of spontaneous labour and am uncomfortable with the risks of an induction, but for medical reasons, obviously its great.

I'm not convinced I needed to be induced on the day I was 40 weeks exactly, but I'll never know.

  • Personally I go with my doctor's advise- so if she were to tell me that I need to be induced then I would go with it.
  • Go with your doctor - sounds like he/she doesn't like unnecessary interventions.  Do all of the "natural" things to help your body out (if it makes you comfortable).  Like all of the old wives tales - spicy food, pineapple, sex, walking, bouncing on ball.  If you want to try to get your doctor to help you out, ask to get your membranes swept.  FTM don't usually go before 40 weeks so don't panic.

I went to 41 weeks and 2 days with my son. I say wait it out. I was scheduled to be induced due to BP problems and protein in my urine, but I ended up not needing it. Labor happened by itself.

You will most likely do an NST and scan to check baby's blood flow and your placenta. At 40 weeks I did that. Then they will monitor you until 42 weeks-- that is if you make it that far. My understanding is that you don't have to worry about placental disintegration or problems with it until after 42 weeks. Its rare that a woman makes it that far.

  • As long as baby and momma are healthy my midwife will let me go to 42 weeks. Then she does daily check ups for momma and baby and as long as everything is okay she will let her mommas keep going. However, the first sign of anything abnormal and I'd go straight to the hospital. She's had clients deliver healthy babies at 43 weeks
  • My SIL and my grandma both went past 42w with one of their babies. I wouldn't even consider induction until after 42w, unless there was a true medical need (and not "size"). I was pressured into an induction with my second baby, and still regret it. If I could have a do-over I would never have agreed. My 3rd baby was born at 41w.

  • I was induced at 39w3d with DS due to chronic hypertension. My mother and her sister both had postdates stillbirths, and I felt my anxiety increasing tremendously as I cleared 39w, especially in light of my blood pressure issues. I have no regrets about my induction; it was a relatively fast labor and delivery. I have already requested another 39w induction with this baby, which my doctor says is reasonable given my age (35) and hypertension.

I would definitely talk to your doctor about your concerns.
