TTC After a Loss

Ovulation after miscarriage?

Hi all, I recently had a miscarriage at 8 weeks 4 days pregnant on October 28, which is 4 weeks and 2 days ago. I stopped bleeding 2 days later and haven't bled since. I started checking my cervix around that time and it was mostly hard and low. Exactly 14 days after the miscarriage, my cervix was extremely soft and high and I had EWCM the day after. I assumed ovulation. It returned to low and hard after about a day and a half. Now, I assume I am 16 DPO, but I have not gotten AF and had a BFN 2 days ago and today with first morning pee. I also have EWCM right now, and a lot of it and cervix is high and hard. So now I am curious if anything else could have caused the soft cervix and EWCM before (my cervix was low and hard a few days after miscarriage, so it definitely changed)? Or if I am actually pregnant now and I am very concerned about getting negative tests, would that mean this pregnancy wouldn't be viable because of low HCG?

Re: Ovulation after miscarriage?

  • I think there is no way to know if you ovulated unless you are temping to confirm. Fertile CM can happen without ovulation, as can fertile CP. Have you read Taking Charge of Your Fertility? I found it really helpful.

Best of luck to you in your TTCAL journey. :)

  • Do you know if there is another reason for soft cervix and EWCM? I am very concerned about losing another pregnancy.

  • Sometimes your body gears up to ovulate and then doesn't.  You can have multiple episodes of EWCM and even multiple LH surges before you ovulate.  That is why many around here temp - it's the only way to confirm that ovulation actually occurred.
  • I agree with @penelope4612, I had the same happen to me after my mc/d&c. 2 weeks after the procedure I had what would have corresponded to O, even a slight spike in temp (with creamy CM), it seemed like my body was trying. However a week-1.5 wk later I had the true spike and ended up O on day 24! After mc it may takena little longer to get started. This also happened with my first mc, I ended up having AF 5.5 weeks after my mc. So now I am expecting AF Dec 9th (5.25 weeks after d&c). Can't wait...
It's good to temp because it gives you a better idea of what your body is doing, esp. when your cycle is all wonky after mc.

If you are still worried, you should call your ob/midwife.

    Good luck!

  • I just experienced a Mc @ 4 weeks. It's only been 6 days since I began bleeding. Now a spot when I wipe sometimes. (Tmi)I just found a ton of EWCM, which I don't really ever get streaked with blood when I went to the bathroom. I checked CP and is high/soft/open. I had some cramps that felt just like ovulation cramps yesterday but chalked it up to the mc. Is it possible to ovulate so soon after a loss? I'm going to get some opks. I haven't started temping yet. Any help would be appreciated.
  • Nvm I see yall have answered my question in previous comments that I didn't see. Sorry! And thank you!
  • For me I passed the sac on 11/5 (had been spotting for a few days before) and confirmed O on 11/21, so 16 days later. I had EWCM and fertile CP about 5-6 days before and thought I would O then. The EWCM disappeared on about 11/18 and I didn't O until three days later, which can be pretty normal as EWCM is produced before O. Bodies are not perfect and you can gear up to O and have all the symptoms and never actually O. Cycles can get thrown off for various reasons, some unknown, but a MC can most definitely throw off your cycle.

  • I had a d&c on the 6th and my hcg just went negative earlier this week. tons of ewcm but nothing else. good luck guys :) eggs for everyone!
  • I had a positive opk along with other indicators. We just HIO in case. I really wish I was temping already!
  • Thank you all so much! This is definitely a relief! I really don't want to go through a miscarriage again, and I wouldn't wish such a thing on anyone. I am probably going to constantly worry until I have my next baby in my arms, and then starts a whole new kind of worry. Pregnancy is such a worrying and waiting game. But it's all worth it. Good luck to all if you lovely ladies!
  • Any suggestions for when to start temping after a MC if you never temped before? I don't want to accidentally get pregnant before moving forward with the plan for clomid and luteal phase support the RE and I discussed. I'm a late ovulator and pretty certain I have a luteal phase defect (I have a prolactinoma).

The idea of condoms makes abstinence seem more appealing LOL.

I know I can get pregnant, staying that way is my challenge.

  • @MrsBinPA - you can start temping at any time.  Some people ovulate right away after a MC, some people it takes a few weeks, some people it takes longer.  I think to some extent it depends upon how fast your HCG goes down.  I have heard of people ovulating when HCG is low but before it hits zero.

If you're going to use fertility friend (what most people on these boards use) you do need 6 low temps recorded before your temp spike (with 3 high temps after the spike) for the app to acknowledge that you ovulated.  If you get AF, just make sure to record that in your app.  You might have not been temping yet when you ovulated or you might not have ovulated at all.  Once you get AF, FF will start a new chart and then it should be easier to tell once you ovulate.
  • @penelope4612 Thanks!

I have FF and was using it to track CM, periods and OPKs over the last year, just not temps.   I'll start tomorrow.  I suspect HCG is probably still high enough that I will have meaningful temp data moving forward.

As PP said, you can start temping at any time. Just understand that temping isn't a form of birth control as it only tells you AFTER you ovulated (when you see a steady temp rise). It helps you predict your cycle if you do it for several months, but that's about it. You could Maybe use OPKs as a way to predict when you're going to O, but that just tells you when you're having an LH surge and considering how long sperm survives in the body, you could already have some hanging out in there when your LH surges prior to O.

Best of luck to you! :)
