I would love a glass of wine or beer tonight at dinner . I'm about to pump to I have milk for LO later . I've read to wait 3-4 hours until breastfeeding . Wondering what you ladies have done or are planning on doing tonight if you want a drink . FTM here
I def drink a glass of wine a couple times a week and feel comfortable pumping (and not dumping). As long as I don't feel tipsy I keep the milk. Mama needs her wine!
My doctor says if I don't feel it, it's metabolizing in a way that it will not impact my milk. If I feel it, my body isn't metabolizing the alcohol and therefore it is in my milk. I regularly have a glass of wine or a beer. I've never even felt slightly fuzzy with what I've drank so I feel good.
Doc & MIL (lactation consultant at her hospital) says that if you can drive legally (.08 or less) you can feed w/o dumping. I had 2 glasses of wine 2.5 hours apart and DD is feeding right now.
I poured myself a glass of wine twice at dinner. The first time, as soon as I poured it, LO wanted to nurse so I put it down and it disappeared. The second time, I took about 3 sips and LO wanted to feed again. About two hours later my grandmother asked me if that was my wine glass lol
I agree with PP's. If you can drive/don't feel it, you're okay.
I drank a few glasses of wine here and there throughout the afternoon and night, just paced myself so I wouldn't have too much too quickly. I still nursed my son on demand because I felt fine - I just used the milkscreen test strips before nursing if I wanted confirmation and they tested clean both times I tested. He's going through his 6-week growth spurt so he's feeding quite a bit. At one point I didn't feel comfortable nursing so soon so we gave him a pumped bottle instead. I didn't have to pump and dump at all which was good because I hate wasting milk. We're about to visit some family so I plan to do the same today.
Don't dump your precious milk. Alcohol content rises in your breastmilk like it does in your blood, the more alcohol the more in your breastmilk. Usually if I have just one small drink with dinner I don't worry about it. If I have more to drink, I pump then wait another 3 hours for the alcohol to metabolize.
I second the milk screen strips. You can also get them at babies r us and I think target. You're body will filter the alcohol out of your milk at the same speed as your blood. There will also still be alcohol in any new milk after pumping and dumping. The only time I've dumped is times like tonight (first true date night with a sitter) where I was pretty full when we were going to bed and I knew if I tried to wait it out I would either wake up soaked or in pain.
Everyone is right about having it in moderation however I have an issue with drinking especially in evening because I feel like I'll be too sleepy to handle the baby at night as she still gets up every 3 hours or paranoid I'll sleep through her cues at night lol. I feel like I can't drink freely unless my mom or someone else is taking her at night for me (rarely ever happens ... Lol) I miss my Pinot
Re: A thanksgiving drink?
i was also told if you feel fine, are ok to drive, you're ok to nurse.

Here's another pretty good article about alcohol and breastfeeding.
