1st Trimester

Dates confusion!

Hi ladies. I know it's a lot of reading, but here is a timeline of my current (somewhat anxiety-inducing) situation:

30th September = LMP started.
4th October = LMP ended.
12th October = DH and I decided to start trying for a baby.
27th October = 12DPO according to fertility tracker, and got a BFP on a FRER (and on the days following took several more, just to check that it was real, haha!).
6th November = thought I was 5w1d, digital test said I was 4-5 weeks gone.
18th Novmber = still didn't have morning sickness. Took another digital test, and it said I was 5+ weeks gone.
11th November = first GP appointment, where she estimated my due date as 8th July based on LMP.
25th Novmber = first midwife appointment. She said the same (8th July), told me I was 7w6d, and referred me for a viability scan.
26th November = viability scan. Saw a heartbeat (yay!), but were told that baby was measuring 6w6d, rather than the 8 that I thought.

I am stoked to have seen a heartbeat, but a little worried that bubba is measuring a week less than I calculated. My midwife said that I must have just ovulated later than I thought, but how could I have gotten a BFP so early if that was the case?

Has anyone else been in a similar situation? What was the outcome?

P.S. Sorry if this has same question has been asked a million times before- the search function didn't help me too much this time around! TIA! xxx

Re: Dates confusion!

  • It is absolutely possible that you ovulated later than you thought. Do you have regular periods every 28 days? If not, that could be why. Measuring a week behind isn't an issue quite yet. If you measure consistent at your next scan, that's all that matters. Try not to worry too much. A heart beat is a very, very reassuring sign.

You'll make yourself crazy if you worry too much. I am going through something similar. If you go with the flow, you'll have less stress which is better for you and baby!

  • Unless you're charting and temping, there's no way to know when you ovulated, which means there's no way to know exactly how far along you are.

    QFP
  • First off ultrasounds are not the end-all-be-all that people think they are. I believe most doctors add a +/- 5 days to the estimated gestational age because variability exists which puts you right in the ball park for where you believe you are. Being off by a week happens, as long as baby is growing appropriately at the next scan, I wouldn't worry.
  • Thank you, ladies! I know I need to just relax and then both myself and the baby will be better off! :) I guess the fact that I got a BFP so early on according to her dating threw me off.

@cMichelle0423 What is QFP? Sorry- not quite up to speed on all the acronyms! xxx

You should be fine, my baby also measured almost a week behind and we heard a HB too.

At our 12 week scan, he was growing 4 days ahead.

    I'm now 17 weeks with a healthy boy :)

Oh and just in case you're wondering, no morning sickness, food aversions, "common" pregnancy symptoms are normal. I've had none and my pregnancy is low risk and healthy.
  • Qfp is quite for posterity in case you dirty deleted.
  • Lol I always thought QFP meant Quit freaking Posting
  • I had something similar happen. Went in for my first ultrasound thinking I was around 7 weeks and was told I was only 5. Which means I got my BFP only 3 weeks after my LMP started. I was super confused on how that was possible that early. But all that really matters is that you're pregnant. Congratulations!
  • @tgortney Thanks for sharing that! I have a lot more hope now! :) Also, thanks for clarifying what 'QFP' means! I don't even know how to delete, so I wouldn't anyway, haha! All the best for the remainder of your pregnancy! xxx

@ashleyrobertson0113 Thank you!! Same to you! <3
  • My scan I thought I would be 6+5 based on the positive OPK and length of cycle. Initial scan put me at 5+6 (+/-4) but still made me nervous. And it wouldn't have meant that I got my positive pregnancy test 5 days after the positive OPK, which made no sense. Just hoping the little peanut is a couple of days ahead then what they think and I will get a positive surprise at one of my scans that I am further ahead in a week than I thought. :-)
  • @maryworley1 I'm right in that boat with ya! If I ovulated as late as my dating scan indicates, that means that I got a BFP a few days after conception, which isn't possible... It's all a little baffling to me! I suppose until I have cramping/bleeding, or see that the HB has disappeared, I should just should up and be grateful! ;) xxx
  • This seems to be very common. Based on the dates they gave me at my viability scan, i ovulated about 3 days before my BFP! It made me worry a bit too, but at the followup scan 14 days later the embryo had progressed well for that time frame so there we go! I asked my midwife about the dates mix up and she couldnt really give me an answer either.

I think you're confused. You can't ovulate three days before your BFP. That's not medically possible.

@Kristin712 i know its not medically possible, thats what i mean! I was in the same boat as PP's with being told that i must have ov'd much later then i thought, except that i got my bfp 10 days after when I thought i ov'd, so THEY were telling me that i must have ov'd later except i cant have otherwise it would have been negative, not positive. I asked my midwife and she couldnt give me a clear answer either, and i wasnt temping so i dont actually know when i ov'd, but i know its not when they think i did, or there is no way i would have got a positive. I think i ov'd on 21st june, and i got a clear BFP on 30th june. Based on dating scan they are telling me it must have been about a week later then i "thought" but then how was my bfp possible? Sorry if this post was long and confusing i just think i needed to explain myself a bit better lol

Ahh gotcha. I didn't gather that from your original post.
  • Yeah i get that it was a bit confusing! There seem to be alot of us out there who think we are 6-7 weeks along, only to go in to be told that we are only 5 or so weeks. I was trying to relate to the OP that It can be a little scary but as long as the pregnany "progresses" at a normal rate there doesnt seem to be anything to worry about.
