Vbac anyone?

Hi ladies,
I had a c section with my now 2 year old daughter because she was breech, and now my doctor has given me the complete freedom to decide if I wanted a repeat c section or trying vbac, anyone else had a successful vbac ? Or anyone going with vbac this time around ?

Re: Vbac anyone?

  • I am hoping to vbac this time around. My case is a little different, so it has to be presented to a board to see if they will approve, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed I will be allowed to vbac. My daughter was IUGR at 36 weeks, and I had low amniotic fluid so we were sent straight to the OR with no chances of being induced for a vaginal. Good luck momma and hopefully u have a successful vbac☺. I'd love to hear from other mommas as well.

  • I also had a c-section due to my first baby being breech. My doctor has given me the all clear to try for a vbac this time, so I'm going to try-- unless this one ends up breech as well. I know there are some women on here considering it; there was a thread very early on about it.

With my first, I had prepared for an unmedicated vaginal birth. As much as I'd love to try for that this time, I think I'll have to get an epidural so that I can avoid general anesthesia if they need to do a c-section. Once I get closer, I'm going to consult with the anesthesiologist to see if I could have the catheter placed without necessarily getting numbed up to try to vbac. I forget how long it takes the medicine to take effect in case I'll need it.
  • +I was induced at 41+2, failure to progress and fetal distress led to a C-section after 24+ hours of labor. Would love to try for a VBAC even though I think my likelihood of success is low. Laboring at least for a little while (with ruptured membranes) is good for the baby even if it ends in C-section...

  • I had a C-section with my twins because they were in the same sac, but then had a successful VBAC with my 4th boy!  I loved my C-section (compared to my first vaginal delivery) but attempted a VBAC because they say a vaginal delivery is better if there is no indication for a C-section.  I was successful and it was much less traumatic than I thought it would be.  Good luck to everyone hoping for a VBAC - it is possible!

  • we're gonna play it by ear. first baby was frank breech & low fluid, emergency C at 35 wks. I think this time we will schedule the C to be safe, and if anything happens naturally before that (and baby is in a good position), I can most certainly try for a vbac.

@TunieBee this is interesting. May I ask why this is?

Well, the way I stated it is actually a bit of a generalization.  It's true for first pregnancies certainly--the stress of labor and being exposed to the uterine bacteria is good for the baby's immune system. For subsequent labors (following a C-section), it's actually a little different.  The labor and bacteria part still holds true, however a failed TOLAC (trial of labor after cesarean) actually statistically has worse outcomes for mom and baby than a scheduled C-section.  A successful TOLAC (thus a VBAC) has better outcomes than a C-section, so the real story is that it depends....My hope is I can labor at least a little bit and if I have a successful vaginal delivery great and if labor ends in c-section, I hope there are no complications...

  • @TunieBee that's good to know! Hopefully that helps me since I labored for 6 hrs after my water broke before they did a csection for frank breech position (he flipped late). I hope your vbac goes well!
  • I am trying for a vbac! I had 2 vaginal births followed by a c section with my 3rd because she was transverse (although the day of, she was head down and the nurse told me she thought my c section was unnecessary! Still upset about all of it actually...).
My NEW Dr says I am a great candidate for a vbac since I've done vaginal birth twice before. I will say my 1st v birth was tough but nowhere near as tough as recovering from a c section. My 2nd v birth was a piece of cake with a super quick recovery time, so I am really praying hard that vbac works out for me, and for all of you too!
  • I'm hopeful but not very optimistic. After 30+ hours of labor and never getting past a 2, plus the baby was large and OB was worried about shoulder dystocia, I ended up with a CS. I've discussed it some with my OB and he said that if I have a textbook pregnancy and labor he is willing to go for vbac, but he will not induce and he wants to set a date and if the baby doesn't come by then, it's scheduled CS. I'm so Type A that seeing my due date come and go last time made me a little crazy, so I'm happy with this plan. Can we have some VBAC hopeful check-ins maybe monthly or something? I think it would help to encourage each other.

  • I had a c-section with my first, then 2 VBACs. I'm also a former labor and delivery nurse and have seen many successful VBACs. If your doctor thinks you can try, my advice is to go for it. A c-section is major surgery and comes with more risk, not to mention the long recovery time.

I wish I could but my ob recommended against it and I completely understand why.

For my first, I was induced. They tried everything, Foley bulb, pitocin, manually "broke my water", etc. My cervic dilated only after more than 36 hours. I was exhausted, pushed for another 4 hours and then they decided to do a c-section 48 hours after being induced.

It was a crappy experience ontop of having the slowest dilating cervix in the world so my chances of a successful vbac are pretty low.

However even though a scheduled c-section is in the cards, I'm kind of hoping for spontaneous labor...I have a secret fantasy that it all goes swimmingly well this time around.

  • I was planning on trying to VBAC with my second.. I was a great candidate (with my first I got to 10cm but he turned at the end.. Just his position) Both my Dr and I were uncomfortable going past due, and I did not want to be induced as it's dangerous. So I had a repeat c/s because I didn't go into labor on my own.
A good friend of mine lost her daughter during a VBAC attempt, as well as her ability to have more children. It traumatized me and I'm not going that route this time. RCS gladly
  • Unsure still. I recovered quickly from my CS so that part isn't a concern for me. I was a good candidate for a VBAC but had to have vaginal surgery in February. It's still tender at random times. So it might be decided that a RCS is the best option. That is something that won't be decided for a few more months still.
