@Mizuiro007 Thanks! That's good to know. I feel like many resources are so pro-breast that it makes it sound like it's all or nothing.
I havent done warm compresses yet. I'll try that at home when I pump, but it will probably be too much for when I'm at work. I did have my flanges checked by a LC back when DD was a newborn so I believe they're ok. I've just started using a hands-free bra and I've seen some improvement with that because I can do compressions (without heat) and put my mind elsewhere. The most I've ever gotten per session is 7 oz, but it took almost a half hour, which Is a lot of time when I'm working.
@breezypip 7oz is actually really great! If the warm compresses work at home, for work you might try those little hand warmers. There are the disposable kind and the reusable ones with a little flexible disk inside. They might be enough to help without having to worry about warming them somewhere.

@Mizuiro007 that's a good idea! Yeah, the 7 oz was only once but I was happy with that. But my total amount is breaking even with DD right now and I have to pump 2-3 times at work and In the morning and at night. My night session gets maybe 1-2 oz. It's exhausting. And on top of that DD has "pumping radar". If I wait until she's asleep to pump she inevitably wakes up in the middle of my session and wants to nurse more. Same thing in the morning if I try to do it before she wakes. Every. Single. Time.
This question may have already been answered but I can't find it. DS is 13 weeks and starting to sleep longer stretches (sometimes 7-8 hrs). Do you guys wake up to pump in the middle? I'm not waking up as engorged so I've been sleeping through until he wakes up. He's still gaining weight and hanging good diaper output I just don't want to lose my supply.
@Kaysquared2 I don't. I was crazy engorged the first few days, but my supply adjusted. Now, DD will nurse one side when she wakes up, and I'll pump 4-5 oz from the other.
Your supply will adjust to him sleeping through the night. He will eat more during the day, which signals your body that more is needed during the day and less is needed at night. If you are not waking up engorged then you are likely already somewhat adjusted. There is no harm in waking up to pump if you wish to do so, many women do it to build a stash of stored milk. It just really, really sucks to wake up and pump when you could be sleeping.

Thanks! I am really enjoying the sleep I was just worried. I have quite a bit in the freezer but he doesn't even really take bottles more then 2-3 days a week when I work (working 2-3 5 hr shifts). I haven't dipped into the freezer stash since I pump around 6 ounces at work and he refuses more than 3 oz the entire time I'm gone.
I went back to work a week and a half ago and I have been breastfeeding when home, leaving pumped milk for when I am at work. Last night and tonight DD will cry at the breast, so much so that she won't feed. So I feed her a bottle of expressed milk. The problem is, I can't keep up with the daytime bottles plus this extra night time bottle. I hate pumping, it's the worst, but I need this baby to feed. Anyone else have a sudden breast rejection? Any remedies that worked?
So this sounds weird but I was adjusted to DD sleeping through the night but now I feel like since I've started pumping a lot more being at work I wake up engorged again! It's kind of frustrating...ill have to get up bc sometimes I leak through the pads!!
@caketimes there are the typical suggestions ensuring you're using slow flow/preemie nipples during the day so baby has to work for the milk like when at the breast.
It could also be a growth spurt or cluster feeding. How old is LO?
I haven't had the issue, but from a group I'm on on Facebook they would say just keep bringing baby to breast. You could try expressing a little while you tickle lo's lip to entice them to open up too.

What flow nipple is she on? She might be getting accustomed to the faster flow of the bottle vs slower flow of breast especially at night. I would switch to a preemie or slow flow nipple as pp suggested as well as try hand expressing a little before so she can taste/smell the milk.
Hey all, just a quick update... DD was on a low flow nipple, usibg the Como tomo bottles. I found that the issue was that I was positioning her too far away from the breast, and she couldn't make a deal around my nipple. I fixed that issue and we've had some better feedings.
Also, I keep my paci near because sometimes she just needs a break, and the paci allows her to keep sucking while taking a breather. Thanks for your help!
I have a question for those who are supplementing: When DS (12 weeks) takes a bottle of breastmilk, he takes about 3 or 3.5 oz. If I wanted to replace a feeding with formula, how do I know how much to give.

I would offer 2 oz and then offer 2 oz more and then 2 oz again if necessary. Or you could start with 4 oz. I'm fairly certain formula gets made in 2 oz quantities (we've only used one kind so I can't speak for every kind) and we usually offer it in 2 oz quantities to keep from wasting too much formula.
@Mizuiro007 I remember a while back you posted a really helpful video link about latch and such. Would you mind sending me or posting that link again? I have a friend due in a few weeks that I want to forward that to because it was really helpful!
Anyone notice a slow down in pooping after supplementing with formula? She's only get a few ounces of formula a day but her toots have smelled much worse and she has slowed down her pooping (now maybe once a day).
I I have mastitis AGAIN this time in other breast. My left never recovered fully so I only get 2-3 out of it. Trusty righty is now affected so I have a feeling the same decrease in supply will happen.
@millieb14 DD always poops more when she's had formula. She normally poops maybe 2-3 days of the week (2-3 times each of those days) but will poop every day when she has formula.
Curious if anyone has experience with mole removal while breastfeeding? I have a mole on my right breast (the super producer of the pair) that needs to be taken off. The doctor said it's local anesthetic and I did read that lidocaine is fine. But I'm concerned because it's going into my actual breast, as opposed to the one on my stomach being removed. Should I wait on the one on my breast until I'm done breastfeeding? It's not as bad as the one on my stomach. The doctor didn't think it would be an issue, but I'm also not convinced he really knew if it was an issue.
Has anybody found any nursing friendly casual maxi dresses? It's starting to get warm where I live and I love the ease of a maxi dress (plus no one can tell I haven't shaved my legs).
my LO has started doing this thing where she pop on and off over and over. I tried the LC at my mommy and me group but she latched fine there. LC thought it was maybe my hold but we were fine before and most of the time it's not a problem. I noticed it's more when my boob is pretty deflated already. Could she be trying Just be trying to get another let down? I tried looking for a YouTube video on it but I got Rick rolled instead cause of the words let down hahaha

I have heard they do this when trying to build supply up for a growth spurt. DS will do this more in the evening if he's been cluster feeding since I tend to have a fast letdown unless I'm not very full.
My LO went through a phase like this too about 2 weeks ago. I actually found that (a) flipping her back and forth between boobs helped and (b) holding her head with only the tiniest amount of my hand as possible (so instead of crook of your arm or boppy etc). I still do these 2 things when she is overtired or not nursing well. It oddly like rejuvenates her and calms her at the same time. The hand on head thing really works for me when she is being difficult. So I just cradle her head with my hand only and move her more away from my body.

I EBF and got a mole removed from my back about a month ago. The anesthetic they used didn't affect nursing at all. I'm not sure how it affects things if it's on the breast though.
For the moms that are back to work and pumping at work but still BF in morning, night and weekends...do you keep track of the time of day you pump and have that milk given to the baby during that time of day? Like if you pumped at 8 am does that milk get given to your baby the next day during their 1st morning feeding? I keep reading about the different milk composition at different times of day. Just wanted some advice to see if that amount of work is necessary. Thanks!
Maybe I am doing it wrong, but I don't worry about the time of day. I just make sure there is enough milk to get through the next day. I freeze down whatever I pump on Friday, (and sometimes Thursday depending on how far ahead I get during the week). On Monday I thaw the oldest milk from my stash and combine it with what I pump over the weekend. That way I am rotating my freezer stash, and the girl isn't drinking previously frozen milk for the whole day on Monday. It's been three weeks I have been back at work and so far I am staying ahead of her and still adding to my freezer stash. There are days I only break even, and she eats like a little crazy person on the weekend. I take it as a compliment that she misses her mama and she still prefers drinking from the tap.
So I just picked up DD from daycare -- she's starting her 4th week there -- and they're asking that I send more milk. She is there 9 hours and I send about 20 oz, usually 5 bottles of 4 oz. Now they want 5 bottles of 5 oz, totaling 25 oz because they said DD cries after every bottle because she wants more. DH watches her on Mondays and says he thinks she needs more too... But isn't that a lot?? I don't want her crying from hunger, but I also don't want to over feed her. I was just barely keeping up and with this request I will have to send my first formula bottle. I sometimes nurse her right before I leave, but sometimes she's sleeping and I nurse an hour or two before -- but I still thought 20 oz in 10-11 hours was ok. What should I do?

@mperotti220 I don't worry about a lot of things with my milk. I havent taken much from my freezer stash. She gets freshly pumped milk day to day through the week. I rotate it around where the oldest milk gets used first at the sitter so it never goes more than 3-4 days in the fridge. Then at the end of the week I freeze the surplus aside from maybe 5-10 ounces and just restart on Monday. I don't like the stress of thawing from the freezer and it having to be used within 24 hours so this works for me. I don't worry ab what time I pumped, she's getting the nutrients at some point!

She's being way over fed IMO. Are they using the bottle to soothe? And what kind of bottle/nipple is she using?
@breezypip I struggle with how much DD should be drinking bottle to bottle on a daily basis..but I usually pump in the morning and DH feeds her 5 ounces. I take 24 ounces to the sitter daily. The most I've ever seen her drink at the sitter from being there 8-4:30 is about 15 ounces. Today, she only used 8. So I feel sometimes like my sitter doesn't feed her enough bc I pump consistently 4-5 ounces every 2-3 hours so that's what I offer DD. But she doesn't seem to be having issues so I don't question it. She's a chunk. When DH keeps her from 8-4:30 he uses more like 18-20 ounces. If my mom keeps her it's a nightmare! She goes through so much milk and will offer DD 7 ounces at a time no matter how many times I get mad about it!!
I know im not helping much but I feel like your only option is to send more. I guess my point was..people just feed to their own hearts desire in my opinion no matter what you say. My husband calls me a milk hoarder sometimes haha. I stress ab her getting overfed and stretching her tummy out then I won't be able to keep up with her. And then I stress about my sitter not feeding her enough...it's stressful ha.
And fwiw - my LO has taken 4-5 ounces per bottle for weeks now. So it may not be too much and she's just 12 weeks today. Different babies require different amounts. And the last thing I want to feel while at work is that my LO is hungry.
@breezypip DS is 16 weeks tomorrow and takes 4 3oz bottles while at daycare from 8-5 and DH gives him 2-4oz or formula when he gets home then I bf when I get home at 6:45. When he was getting 4oz he would spit up
@Gingermom15 that's what I think. I was using Dr Browns with a premie nipple, but recently switched to Avent Natural with size 1 nipple because Dr Browns were hell to clean with all the parts. DH thinks she's doing better on the Avent with less dribbling.
I asked them to pace feed and burp her often, but they said she goes nuts when you pull the bottle out so they just let her go.
They also told me that she'll need more since she's getting bigger, which I know is not true of BF babies. They said they knew how to feed BF babies, but it doesn't seem like they understand the differences between BF and formula feeding.
I'm thinking about running the issue by my pediatrician to see what she thinks, and then going back to daycare to try to educate them. I just worry about the crying after the bottle... I don't want to leave her hungry.
@kksquared the bamboobies website. I saw it while scrolling the real answers section on the bump app and it took me there. It said its supposed to have free shipping too but I don't think that worked for me since I live in Hawaii haha. But even then it was 2.75 so I'll take it.

My pediatrician is on vacation, but a doctor in her practice said it was fine to try 5oz bottles to see if she tolerates them. When I raised a concern about feeding her 25 oz in 10 hours they seemed confused as to why I would take issue with it, as long as DD is tolerating it. I'm no expert, but from my internet sleuthing I just don't think that's right. I guess I'll try sending the bigger bottles, one being formula now since I can't possibly pump that much, and see how she does. Sigh... Is there ever going to be a time when feeding my child isn't stressful?
