Eating Less - Concerned!

My LO got her shots last Thursday and turned 10 weeks on Saturday. Since yesterday, she is eating less. She screams at my breast (I'm still using nipple shield bc of latch) and will only take half a bottle of pumped breast milk. She usually takes 4-5 oz of pumped milk. Last night it affected her sleep because she took one less nighttime bottle than normal. She was also very fussy all day yesterday. Today she was more like usual self but struggled with feeding again.

I called nurse and she said could be thrush or teething (she's been drooling a lot). I'm going to keep eye out and call back tomorrow. She recommended smaller, more frequent feedings. Anyone have experience with LO losing appetite?? I'm FTM and worried!!

  • I don't have advice but I've been going through this too and haven't known if I should worry or not. He's 11 weeks and usually eats 6 oz bottles every 2-3 hours. Recently he has started screaming when I put the bottle in his mouth and he won't eat right away, then will only eat 2-4 oz and be done, it takes a few tries and it's very weird. He has been drooling too so maybe it is teething?

  • Wonder week maybe? Eating less is a symptom.

We are in the middle of the 2nd wonder week, ugh almost over! She is 9.5 weeks and has been fussy and napping worse than usual. Over the weekend she was only eat on one side (EBF) and would scream if I tried to switch sides. She has always even on both sides at every feeding. She also didn't eat much before bed Sunday night but then slept 9 hours straight. It continued in the morning, but then all of a sudden yesterday afternoon/evening she was starving and wanted to eat every hour again. I think a slight decrease is normal as long as it isn't for an extended period where weight gain/health would be an issue.

ETA- my LO also got her shots last Wednesday. Could be related to that.
  • I just went through this with DD. She had a mild virus. Does your LO have a rash anywhere? (other than face, that can be because of the drool.) It could also be a wonder week thing, though. Just keep an eye on her and trust your gut.

  • We went through this too at about 11 weeks. I asked the pediatrician about it at our 3 month appointment and she said that the growth curve starts leveling off at about this point so they don't need as much food. She said that as long as DD is on her curve (which she was despite taking less in), it's all good. Before this, she was eating every 2 hours during the day.

I offer a little more than she usually takes in every 3 hours during the day and feed on demand at night. I've also found that walking around the house helps to keep her interested in her eating, otherwise she gets bored as soon as she's taken in enough to not be starving.
  • Thank you for the feedback and tips!! M LO stopped sleeping through the night also in the last 2 days - waking up hungry and then being difficult to get back down. I'm wondering if it's growth related now. She had been sleeping 5-6 hours since 6 weeks. Going to see how she does this weekend then call pediatrician.

She has been drooling and sucking on her hands more frequently but I feel like it's too early for teething! She seems happy and content during the day and is wetting and dirtying diapers, but the sleep regression stinks!
