Not eating enough..

All of a sudden my 4 month one just doesn't want to eat.. We haven't started solids yet, today she only eat 16 oz she weighs 14lbs.. I'm starting to get worried she still has lots of wet diapers and poops once a day any suggestions

Re: Not eating enough..

  • 14 lbs is a pretty good weight. Is your doctor concerned about her weight? And has she only been not eating for today? She could be teething or not interested which can happen if they are teething. Talk to your doctor :) could be the formula or maybe she is getting sick. Our daughter takes forever to eat, like an hour. And she eats 3 1/2 oz, she is 5 months. We see a Gastro specialist, a OT and a PT. Talk to your doctor about it :)

  • I agree, my son went through this when his teething got really bad. If you're worried though, talk to your doctor but if she is having enough wet diapers and pooping, then it could be nothing to worry about. Good luck mama and I hope everything is good with your little one.
  • Every once in a while my LO, who usually downs 30 + oz a day, will skip an entire feeding. It usually only lasts a day and she'll be back on track the next day.
  • We had our 4 month appt on wed and the dr wasn't worried about her weight I think it may be teething it doesn't happen every day just random days she doesn't really want to eat
  • A hungry baby will eat. My kid eats like it's going out of style most days (30-35 oz total), and then other days he'll skip a feeding or two. Ped thinks it's due to the teething and wasn't worried as long as he continues to have enough wet and poopy diapers (and bubs had a LOT of weight issues, so I was worried about this, too).

  • Yup my LO will eat around 32 oz most days but sometimes barely 20oz!
  • I was starting to get concerned as well. We've been doing demand feedings for LO but for the past two weeks, he's taking in 20-24 oz a day (he will have an occasional 28-32 oz day)! He can only handle 4 oz per session (we tried increasing to 6 oz but he just ends up spitting up like crazy). His pediatrician says he's healthy and doesn't have any concerns... She didn't even ask me about his intake at his 4 month appt this past Monday...

I guess I just figured he'd be at 30 oz consistently by now.

  • She could be getting distracted too. That starts around this age. You may need to make sure you feed her in a quiet room so that their aren't distractions. I BF, and any noise that DD hears, she stops and looks around.

  • My DD has a cold so she is congested. This makes it hard for her to take her bottle so she has not been eating all that much. She takes an ounce or two and takes a break then drinks again. Also, if you haven't moved up a level in nipple maybe it is getting harder for LO to drink, try a nipple with more holes.
  • Is this during just the day or 24 hours? I would worry if ur LO is gaining weight! I mine only drink that much and she's gaining weight right on track!
  • I'm having this problem too. My son was up to 30 oz a day in December, then suddenly dropped down to 20, in January he had lost 1.5lbs since his November Dr. visit. We switched formulas and he started chowing again, only to find out he had a milk allergy. So we switched to soy. Right after we switched to soy he got RSV, and we were back to 2-3oz per feeding again. Dr. Said it was fine because he was sick, but he's been feeling great for the past 10 days and still won't eat more. I'm freaking out because he was 14lbs in november and hes only 14 now. He's killing me.
  • My LO has stopping drinking as much as well. He was up to 8 oz bottles every 4 to 5 hours but went back down to 6. since he has been on solids he has actually dropped a bottle but his Dr. says that is fine. He is 6 months and 20 pounds so no trouble eating. good luck!
  • My LO has done the same...I think it's normal once they start eating solids? My ped said it was. She said she'd drink less formula once I increase solids. She was drinking 4-5oz bottles and now only drinks 2-3oz bottles.

I I do understand your concern about the weight though, not gaining since November. Did you call your ped and ask about it? I'm sure it's totally fine. Every baby is different and they LOVE to worry their momma.
