Feeding 4 months

My daughter is 4 months and the doctor tells me I should wait till 6 months to give her cereal or fruits. I've already started giving her rice cereal and she does fine with. I've seen mixed reviews as far as giving food at 4 and 6 months. FTM and what to do the right thing

Re: Feeding 4 months

  • As much as I want to start on puréed foods, I am going to listen to my dr. There is no need to rush time. I want to enjoy the moments we have while he's laying in my arms feeding. In the blink of an eye he will be heading off to school.

I also didn't get the okay to start solids yet but she said I could start with a little cereal, but I want to skip cereals and just wait for six months to start solids. Many moms I know have started cereal at 4 months and others skip it and wait till six months to start solids. I think you will know when your little one is ready though, And like the previous post said, I'm not rushing either. I want to enjoy nursing him and when he is ready and the time comes I also want to enjoy that phase of making and preparing his food! Our mommy instinct will let us know and if you think your baby is ready, consult with your pediatrician then go for it, and if not just wait until six months. Good luck mama and you're doing great, enjoy your little one! :)

  • Where I'm from all doctors recommend starting at 4 months. But having friends with babies the same age as mine, I can see some are just not ready yet. I think it depends on your child. My little girl loves her food. She has her mouth open likea little bird, searching for the spoon. And when she takes a bite she says "Mmmmm"
  • I think it's a generational thing too. My parents and in laws have both talked like they expect us to start a 4 months. I'd like to wait for 6 months as long as he's doing well for several reasons. We are breast feeding and had a bumpy start and are finally in a good place. Breast milk is free! And we are cloth diapering, which gets more complicated when they start solids.
  • I do a tiny bit of rice cereal in a bottle at bedtime and the doctor said it's okay as long as she continues to gain weight appropriately. He suggested I wait until 6 months before trying anything else.
  • We were given the ok to start at 4 months but will be waiting until 6 months. We are also skipping cereal and purees altogether and doing baby led weaning.
  • Just had our 4 month appt today. Dr. asked if he's been interested while we're eating and that's a definitive Yes! So she gave us the go ahead for rice cereal but said if he doesn't seem ready to just wait until 6 months. I asked if we could skip the rice cereal and go straight to vegetables and fruit. Her response wasn't a clear yes or no but she did say the reason to start with rice cereal is to get him used to the act of eating and that it's fortified with iron and almost all babies are iron deficient.

So... What are all of you doing? What's your reason for using or skipping rice cereal? I figured it seems more of a filler...

I want to skip rice cereal because of that also, it seems as it just fills them up and I read sometimes it is heavy on their tummies. I rather be able to wait until six months and enjoy making his food and feeding him! But I do know every baby is different and many love cereal and others do fine going straight to solids. What ever you choose to do good luck and enjoy your little one!@mrsrep123

  • We didnt do rice we are doing baby oatmeal. He has been having it once or twice a day for the past two weeks. We will move on to actual veggies in another week or two. My son is 4 months but 20 weeks on Friday.
  • I give my LO cereal but just not a lot. He gets more fruits and veggies. Like we do cereal in the more with a fruit and around our dinner time he'll get cereal with a veggie. He eats about 2-2 1/2 oz of fruit and veggies when I give it to him so I try not to give him a lot of cereal bc I don't want him to get full from that. I'd rather have him have more of the others. We've done rice he's almost done with that so we're going to oatmeal next. Do what you think his best for your LO . If you want just give them a couple bites of cereal so they don't get super full and there's more room in their tummy for fruit and veggies. Thats what I do.
  • FTM here but how are you mamas feeding your lo solids and milk. Do they take less milk now that they are in solids?? Do you feed them/ nurse them in the morning and then solids at night!? Thanks in advanced!
  • LO will be 5 months next week, we tried rice cereal for the first time yesterday. He was trying to suckle the spoon, didn't like it and spit most of it out. We were experimenting to see if it would keep him fuller over night but doesn't seem like he's ready yet.

We might try some baby food carrots next week at 5 months for our own curiosity but won't continue if he treats it like he did the rice cereal. I'm not in any rush to change stinkier diapers.
  • My LO did good with baby food the first two days then refused to eat from the spoon. The very little we did get in her mouth she spit out. So we decided to just wait until 6 months. Maybe she's just not ready.
