Essential Oils

I searched and didn't see a post but I might be wrong. First do they work? Second are they allowed while pregnant I have read mixed reviews I added a little lavender EO in my bath last night and it was like magic and helped so much ! After though I'm nervous about whether or not that are ok. What other oils do people use?

Re: Essential Oils

  • I have been using them...and I had no idea i should question whether to use them! I just googled and now I'm nervous I've been using them too often and in unsafe doses. Ugh...why does pregnancy have to be so nerve wracking?

  • Hi! I use them also. Stephanie Fritz wrote a book about Essential Oils and pregnancy called Essential Oils for Pregnancy Birth and Babies. She is also on FB - "The Essential Midwife". She talks about oils safe for pregnancy, but only specifically doTERRA essential oils. I use that as a guide for what's safe. You should check with your doctor too just in case.
  • As long as you're using them in moderation and not taking them internally, most essential oils are fine during pregnancy. Some are big no-nos, like clarysage, because they cause uterine contractions. There's also a book by a Young Living affiliated person called Gentle Babies, that gives the same info. doTERRA/Young Living are the same company post-split, so the oil recipes are the same. I've been using a mixture of DigetZen and peppermint in a roller ball for MS and it's fantastic. Straight peppermint in a roller ball is also great. And lavender in the diffuser.

  • I used them quite a bit before BFP, but my doctor told me last week that she would avoid them especially if ingested or applied topically.  I still have been diffusing some.  She's a naturopath so for her to say use caution made me nervous since she's generally VERY supportive of EOs.  I have not asked my OB yet.

  • Thanks I've done Lavendsr topically twice but I'll try and hold off. I get MS at night and it really helped me rest both times I'll look into getting a diffuser instead. I might also look into getting the peppermint as well I've heard it is good for headaches but I'll talk to my dr first. Right @BabyC1! I feel like everyday is something new to avoid or be wary of haha

  • I use them all the time and did with my last pregnancy too. Do not take internally and it is recommended that you dilute with a carrier oil when applying. Diffusing it is great or carry around and "waft" inhale for nausea. The reason you won't find much is because there haven't been a ton of studies proving they are safe so you dr will just say they are unsafe (lack of evidence I guess proves unsafe, eye roll) just watch the peppermint during third trimester as it can reduce milk supply and cause breastfeeding issues if that is something you plan on doing. Like pp said there are some oils to stay away from in general that can cause contractions.
  • The skin is an organ of absorption, so what you put on it, ends up in your bloodstream. (Think medication that is in a patch.)

Topical application is generally in a lower concentration than if taken orally, but EOs should be used with caution. Several common ones are contraindicated during pregnancy, so do your research and try to opt for individual oils instead of blends, and use one drop at a time.
  • I have been diffusing lavender every day to help keep calm and I just love the smell. I'll also spray a little in my room before bed if I'm having a hard time winding down. I love essential oils, but I've backed off since finding out I'm expecting.
  • Has anyone used lavender for migraines? I've been having debilitating migraines all week and I read lavender might help.
  • Lavender doesn't help my migraines at all. Peppermint does, both the head pain but also the accompanying nausea.

  • How do you use it? Topically? Do you dilute at all? Thanks!

  • I diffuse a couple of drops each of Lavender, Eucalyptus and Peppermint every night when I go to bed to help with my allergies. I don't plan on stopping that because I don't feel like diffusing is a big deal. A few drops over 2-4 hours of diffusing isn't a lot of oil. I also have some Wild Orange I will diffuse every once in awhile. I don't have plans to apply topically and never ingest.
