Cramping on the wrong side

Hey ladies ~

This was my first medicated cycle (5mg letrozole CD3-7, trigger shot and TI). I did the trigger on Tue and had TI on Wed night. I supposedly O'd sometime on Thursday but am still waiting for confirmation from FF (temp just started to rise this morning but just by a little - I'm really hoping it all worked!).

Anyway, I only had one mature follicle (20mm on the right ovary) but for some strange reason I keep getting cramping on the left side. This happened last year when I was pregnant and they saw on the ultrasound that I'd O'd from the right but I'd gotten intense O pain on the left. WTH? Is this common? Is there an explanation for this? It's just so strange. It's been a sharp, kind of stabbing sensation and is very clearly on the left side. There was one follicle that had reached 11mm on that side but I'm pretty sure didn't release. Maybe it's turning into a cyst and that's causing me pain? Has this happened to anyone else?

Just needed to share this experience...

Re: Cramping on the wrong side

  • I usually track which side I have O pain and it's almost always on the R side, even though I know I'm switching sides more than that (I was participating in some medical studies where where my ovulation was monitored via ultrasound twice per week). I asked about this and was told that the pain doesn't always correlate to the side with the dominate folicle. Organ pain is referred, so this makes sense somewhat. The researcher also told me that there's a lot that science doesn't know about the reproductive cycle, so there's not always a definite answer to questions like this, but it sounds like it is definitely normal to have O pain on the opposite side that you actually release an egg from. Hopefully hat helps a little :)

  • @jenwro - thanks for your response. It's good to know that I'm not the only one! I usually get pain in my left ovary and just assumed I favored that one more. I just like to understand everything that's going on but there's some things that are simply a mystery :-)

  • The first time I got pregnant (February), I had pain on the left but they said I ovulated on the right. I've had pain on the left almost every cycle since, even at times that I'm not ovulating. I'm puzzled about it too. I would think it was a cyst, but there wasn't one when I had an u/s for the first pregnancy.

  • @CarrieandRoy it's so strange, isn't it? I'm glad to know I'm not the only one but it seems like there should be an explanation for this. The pain keeps coming and going, only on the left (and I feel it all the way to the back on that side). And come to think of it, I think I usually tend to feel more on the left. So strange.

  • For all of my medicated cycles, I had various episodes of cramping on both sides.  I think both ovaries try to squeeze off whatever they've got going on, so the undeveloped follicle on the left may pop open even if it doesn't have anything useful to contribute.  With all the cramping, I didn't once develop a cyst.

Also, just to say-- the trigger shot causes a lot of ovarian cramping, and for me, the cramping continues for about a week.  I don't feel anything like that on natural cycles.
Me- 39 (turning 40 in April), TTC for the first time ever (since Jan 2015), low ovarian reserve
Married 3/14/14 to my wonderful wife, but her sperm count is rather low
TTC with frozen donor sperm and science

    7 IUIs, 7 BFNs.
2 IVF attempts, both cancelled and converted to IUI, both BFNs.
Decided that my tired old ovaries are ready to retire.
Next step- reciprocal IVF, using my wife's eggs, my uterus!
fresh 5 day transfer (2 embryos) 4/17/17- BFP!
Identical twins "due" 1/2/17 (but anticipated arrival sometime December)

  • @KLake42 thanks for sharing your experiences with this! I'd read that a side effect of the trigger shot was cramping but I thought it was just right after the shot. I didn't feel anything for a day or two after the shot so thought I was lucky. But maybe the side effect was just delayed for me? I sometimes get random cramping at random times since I have PCOS but this has definitely been a bit more intense. I'm going to just assume it's all trigger related and hopefully it'll subside in a few days.

  • My pain comes and goes too, but it doesn't go through to the back. I've googled it before and there are a zillion reasons for abdominal pain, so I gave up.
