3rd Trimester

Blurry Vision

Does anyone else get this as a pregnancy side effect? I had it in the third trimester with my first as well. It's not pre-eclampsia or anything else serious ...but I'm told it's just one of those things your hormones can do to you. It went away last time after I delivered so I'm not worried about long term affects but OH MY GOD is it annoying. I don't even feel super comfortable driving and looking at spreadsheets at work is a nightmare. I got some visine and have been using that multiple times a day but it doesnt really help much..

Anyone else dealing with this? Have you figured out a way to make it bearable? can you remind me that it really does go away after delivering? haha

Re: Blurry Vision

  • Maybe you could try some of the simple reading glasses they sell at the pharmacy?

  • I wear contacts, and during the end of my second trimester, I noticed I was having double vision. I went to my optometrist for a check up. Turns out, one of my eye's vision had gotten better, because of pregnancy. He said glucose level has some effect on your vision.

Why don't you schedule an appointment. I'm sure they can give you more acurate & helpful solution :)
  • From what I've read about vision changes during pregnancy is that it's best just to wait it out until baby is born. Unless you have great insurance and can get glasses and an exam for free, just breathe and try to deal with it.

  • I already wear glasses but my vision is definitely worse. Oddly, with glasses on I'm fine but it seems way worse when I'm not wearing them, even thought I know that makes no sense. I can't even get dressed in the morning without them when I used to wait until I was on my way out the door. Everything I've read says it will go away within a few weeks after birth, fingers crossed.

  • So yes. And my theory (I honestly can't remember if i read this somewhere or came up with it on my own) is that our vision blurs so we slow down. You know, because we used to hunt and gather and do all kinds of dangerous things. If we can't see well enough to do it, it forces us to chill out and accept help from other people. This might have been especially useful in the past when our species was still really active and we usually didn't know we were even pregnant until we started showing.

That's my guess anyway - i can't think of another use for this random side effect.
  • @groovylocks well that is interesting! I seem to get all the most random side effects.
  • how often do you do distance viewing? looking far away is the exercise your eye muscles need most, not close up, i recommend looking at the far tree line/clouds for 20 minutes a day if possible, while you're on the phone can be easier, but they are little muscles in there and they can be worked out, and eat carrots or blueberries or both
  • My eye sight has improved with pregnancy! My insurance is awesome so I changed my prescription glasses at the beginning and am hoping it stays. I had noticed my eyes were getting blurrier with glasses at about 3 months pregnant, so I had a check up. Turns out the prescription that has been relatively the same for 5 years had improved. My eye doctor warned me it might go back to being worse after pregnancy, but I couldn't drive or work with blurry vision. So I got new glasses. My contacts don't match the new prescription though, but I don't like wearing them anyways.

Fingers crossed they stay this way after birth!
  • I've had poor vision for years, and found out that one of my eyes has improved this pregnancy after a visit to the eye doctor. If you can afford a visit to an optometrist, definitely go and get checked out. You may need glasses, if only temporarily.
