Narrow Cervix

Yesterday I had a physical and pap. This is the first pap I've seen this OB/GYN for and she mentioned "everything looks really good, but were you aware that you have a slightly narrow cervix"? I wasn't aware of this and previous dr's have never mentioned it to me. She went on to explain that it could be a non-issue if I grow and deliver a 6-7lb baby at 35-37 weeks, but that a 8-9lb baby at 38-40+ weeks would be increasingly difficult and may result in a CS. She said not to worry about it and that we would see how things are looking in the early spring.

Since she said "slightly", I'd like to think that it's not Stenosis or a completely incompentent cervix-- I believe she may have pointed that out of it was the case??

I'm just wondering if there are any other FTMs or 2ndTMs that have experience with this same thing, or have been told the same thing?

Re: Narrow Cervix

  • I'm not familiar with the condition, but hopefully she will provide more information at your next appointment.  If she doesn't volunteer any information, you may want to be prepared with some questions.

I haven't had this, just wanted to give you some comfort.
My sis was told that her 1st baby was measuring very large and the she would likely need a c/s.  And she didn't, baby was actually completely average sized (7 pounds) and she had a normal delivery.  My point is just to try not to worry too much about things you can't control :-)

  • Hi....I have had abnormal paps in the past which led to a colposcopy. when doing the colposcopy and discussing options should further action be needed, my doctor had mentioned that she would be weary of doing a leep (where they cut away part of your cervix with the abnormal cells) because she felt mine was short to begin with. Now being pregnant, this makes me very nervous. I now have a new OB and of course I was so nervous at my first appt I completely forgot to bring this up. He did a pap and didn't say anything about it though. I'm hoping this doesn't mean  I might need a cerclage or something. All we can do is hope for the best. Good luck!!
  • Ultrasounds can be off by up to 2 pounds ether way, so just because your baby is "measuring large" doesn't mean anything.

    Off topic- sorry!!
  • Thanks, all. As of now I've gone to Dr. Google and made a list of questions for my next appt. I'm not worried, as I believe she would have placed more importance on it if I need to be concerned.
  • My doctor mentioned this to me at my pap, but I just put it out of my mind the whole pregnancy. At 38 weeks baby was measuring over 11 pounds (I was freaking huge- and my ultrasound measurement was accurate) and my blood pressure was high so he recommended a csection for fear baby would get stuck and things get even more complicated. I don't regret it and now know whatever is going to happen will happen :)
  • I was told I have a narrow cervix by one doctor. I was unable to deliver my son vaginally. I am not convinced this was due to me having a narrow cervix, we kind of had a lot better against us. I am smaller (average small, not too small) and he was an 8 lb baby and his head was in the 100th percentile so I ended with a section. I am actually thinking strongly of trying to do VBAC this time around. I have been doing a lot of research this time around (I was 19 when I delivered my son ) and I think with certain stretches and prenatal yoga, I can do this!

This EXACT thing happened to me!!! Baby only measured 8 on US tho and said "no. That's a 9lb baby" and after having my pelvis measured dr suggested an US. I begged her to let me try without a CS and she said it would be fine and that they would safely be able to interviene if needed. It ended in CS because he was just too big for my pelvis (9lb). Should've listened. But glad I tried.
