3rd Trimester

Super nauseated!

I am 28 weeks today, and for the past three weeks all I can keep down is soft foods like yogurt, hello, or applesauce. I started drinking a Special K protein shake everyday just for the vitamins, but I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem, or if anyone has any recommendations for something I may can stomach. Thanks in advance!!!

Re: Super nauseated!

  • Have you brought this up to your doctor?

  • I talked to him today and he said as long as I'm not dehydrated and I'm able to keep ANYTHING down that I would be fine and to keep drinking the protein shakes. He also prescribed a higher dose of an acid reflux medicine, which could be the reason for it all but when I get sick I don't have heartburn. :/ I'm just tired of eating the same three things all the time.
  • If the main problem is heartburn then stick to things that are a little more plain (like the things you've listed). You can also try baked or mashed potatoes, potato soup (or any soup that's not spicy or overly seasoned), pastas (try to stay away from tomato sauces as they can worsen heartburn) and oatmeal. That's the main softer foods I could think of at the moment. Also, try to stay upright for 15-30 minutes after eating and sleep on your left side. I have ridiculous heartburn with my pregnancies and these are all things that help me. Oh, and don't over-eat. If you can do several smaller meals that will also help. :)

  • My nausea has been back with a vengeance as well, and I'm at 34 weeks.  The advice I've gotten, besides everything from PP, was:
    1) make sure to take antacids promptly with food.  Do not delay until nausea rears its ugly head
    2) snack on raw almonds.  They supposedly help calm down stomach acid.
    3) take papaya enzyme--can be found in chewables at some health food stores.  Helps with digestion.
    4) not that you weren't doing it already, but avoid trigger foods--caffeine, chocolate, high fat stuff, citrus
    5) make sure to keep your torso upright after eating.  This is more than just 'don't go lay down.'  Don't bend over to pick up laundry.  Don't put away groceries in the bottom drawer of the fridge.  Do nothing that encourages what's in your stomach to make it's way back toward your throat.
    6) put 1-2" blocks under the head of your bed to keep you elevated while you sleep and take a tums or two at bedtime
Chances are, yes, it's stomach acid related.  I can't say that I feel the "burn" that much in my esophagus, but my throat seems to be perpetually sore, which I'm told is another symptom of heartburn.  The almonds have been a great option for me, because it least it offers something with some crunch.  I'm so sick of bland food.  Good luck!

  • Thank you!! The almonds help and I started taking the antacid after eating.. It seems to have gotten much better. :)
  • If I usually eat some fruit or drink orange juice before bed I won't feel as sick in the morning. I take zofran for nausea though.
For heartburn and indigestion which can make you nauseated as well, I take zantac.
