3rd Trimester

Pediatrician

FTM here. I figured I'd wait to find and him a pediatrician once he's here. I have no idea why I thought my OB would be the one to circumcise him, but I totally did. So now I know, but at what point are you supposed to call around and find a baby doctor?

Re: Pediatrician

  • My hospital won't let me leave without telling them who the baby's pediatrician is... You should probably find one ASAP. Your OB could probably recommend someone or your insurance could give you a list of ones near you.

You should find one before lo gets here. When we found ours, they asked what hospital we were delivering at since they will pediatrician or someone in the practice come check out our babies within 12 hours of birth.
Our OB office asked who we have already signed up with so they can call them and have them come visit soon after birth.
Also, why wouldn't you want one lined up in case something happens soon after coming home?

It looks like my hospital is different from the pp's but they keep an on-call pediatrician that does all the initial examinations and circumcisions. I do have a pedi lined up before hand but that's because all of my children see the same one. Maybe call the hospital you're delivering at and ask what their policy is. Good luck! :)
Also, the on-call pedi has an offsite practice that they offer for you to enroll with but will also give recommendations for others. If you're having a boy and doing a circumcision I highly recommend having that done before you even leave the hospital.

  • We made arrangements with my DS pedi when I was around 33 weeks. My ob office and hospital gave us a list of pediatricians associated with the hospital.
  • I found my son's pediatrician when I was around 28 weeks...they will come within the first 24 hours and check him over in the hospital.
  • We need to have a pediatrician before leaving the hospital. But regardless, I was told at my hospital's birthing class that the OB is the one who performs the cicumcision, not the pediatrician. This isn't an issue for me though as I'm having a girl.

Some OBs do, some don't. At my hospital my OB doesn't. All of my boys and my families boys have been done by the pediatrician. Every hospital is different which is why finding out now is the best option. :)

  • It's actually broken down geographically due to insurance issues (my pediatrician told me all about it when our son had to be re-circumcised do to a botched on by the OB). If you are on the east coast, it's more likely the OB, out west it's the pediatrician. I'd find one before your child is born, regardless. You'll need to see him/her really soon anyway.

  • Interesting... I am on the east coast and the OB does it, so that makes sense.

This is the same for me too, excpet I think they come within the first 48 hours.  Ever since I hit about 20 weeks or so, every time I went to the OB they'd ask if I had researched or found a pediatrician for him yet.  I finally settled on one last week at 29 weeks.  They took down some basic information of mine as well as expected due date.  I believe I was told to call them or the hospital would get in contact within the first 24 hours for them to come see him.
