weight concern

Im 5'4 and before i got pregnant i weighed 158 pounds. Im 17 weeks. So far i haven't gained any weight, but I've lost 9 pounds. I'm a bit concerned, i don't see my doctor again until next month but when i call the receptionist just tells me to wait until my next appointment to go over it with him. Has this happened to anyone else?

Re: weight concern

  • I lost weight during first trimester due to morning sickness. Since then I haven't gained or loss anymore weight (16 weeks now) and I think that is in part to the small meals throughout the day routine.

  • Weight loss can be normal - especially in the beginning since baby isn't putting on a lot of weight right now (FWIW I am down 14 lbs).  Eat when you can (as healthy as you can) and keep up your water intake.  Talk to your OB at your next appointment.

This. Also, since you were (a little) overweight before pregnancy, you doctor will probably only recommend about 10-20 pounds of weight gain total. I wouldn't worry in the mean time. Being down in the beginning may help you to end up at a healthier place come delivery time. :)

  • As long as baby is growing there is no reason for concern. I had my 20 week appointment today, and although I only gained 3.5 pounds this whole pregnancy and still fit into all of my clothes, my doctor was not at all concerned. I specifically asked about the weight, and she confirmed that as long as baby is growing, all is well. (Mind you, I was a bit overweight to begin with, so I'm not supposed to gain a whole lot anyways).
  • I started out a little underweight (5'4" and 114lbs) and haven't gained at all yet (20 weeks).

My doctor has never been concerned. Same thing happened last pregnancy. I'm sure your baby is growing just fine!

  • Discuss with your Dr at the next appointment, but as PPs have said, if you are making healthy choices you should be fine. I'm 18+2 and I've lost 12lbs so far.

I'm confused at how you know she was overweight? I'm 5'5 and weighed 153 when I got pregnant (weigh 150 now) and I have a body fat percentage of around 18%. Muscles, baby!

And to the original poster: I've been concentrating on getting plenty of healthy foods and eating good fats whenever I can. You want any weight gain to be from healthy choices, not from junk, so I'd just keep eating nutrient rich foods and you'll probably be just fine. I understand that it's disconcerting. I feel the same way. I just remind myself that your body will take when it needs. My uterus is measuring 3 week ahead and baby is right on schedule, so all is perfectly fine. :)

Good point. Overweight based on BMI. OP I'm sorry I assumed.

  • I started at 160. With no morning sickness I lost 8 lbs and I'm 17 weeks and gained 1 lb back. My ob told me not to lose any more

  • Lost 10 lbs before I started gaining at 20 weeks with DS. From there I gained 15 lbs. All was well (I'm 5'3" and started at 160 lbsish...the best I can remember).

Baby #2...I've gained 2 lbs at 16 wks.
