Is it wrong that I feel this way?...

In light of all the recent attacks and threats against the US ... I feel extremely guilty for bringing children into this world ... I can't stand it. It's literally tearing me up inside to think something awful could happen. I live in the middle of a redneck town. My neighbor just murdered a friend in his house and shot his wife. I am constantly locking my doors and listening intently to any and every noise. I get so scared every time the dogs run up the stairs on the porch in fear they're the quiet steps of a terrorist or even my neighbor. I can't leave my windows open to have a nice breeze coming in because I can hear my neighbors yelling all hours of the night... "open the GD door!" And random gunshots that ring out way to early in the morning... the neighbor actually shot a gun off and the bullet bounced off of the tree in my backyard... I am scared to let Cohen go outside when he's older. I'm scared to go on family vacations anywhere... sometimes I hate that I brought life into this awful world...

Re: Is it wrong that I feel this way?...

  • It is very frightening, I agree. It sounds like you have a more immediate situation that needs addressed. I would be finding the fastest way out of that town and to a different area. I hope things change for you because we can't live life scared because that is not fair to us. But we also need to be knowledgable on what is going around us to make smart and safe decisions for our families. Sending thoughts your way.

  • The world can be a terrible and scary place, but at the same time it can be a great place. Human beings have the ability to shine through the darkness and overcome the worst. The human spirit is unshakeable and we have the ability to overcome the darkest of hours. How our children view the world largely falls on how we do because we will be the major influence in their lives.

    I'm really sorry about your living situation. I hope you're able to find a resolution soon and be at peace.

    It's not wrong to feel this way. I am also very concerned for the world my baby boy will live in.
    The best we can do is to actually have children, and raise them well to be the absolute best citizens of the world. Their generation will be empowered to make the world a better place.

    Could not agree more. :)

    Well said!

  • First and foremost, I would be making numerous phone calls to the local PD. You do not have to live that way.

    I also agree with @thaisac1 - the best way to change the world is to have an influence on the future generations.
  • Reminded me of this comic Fowl Language put out.
  • You are all right! Thank you so much for the words of encouragement ♡

    I plan on moving asap! It's just that my son has pretty serious heart defects and my mom has been helping me out with him. And we've called the PD. But we live in such a tiny town. They don't do anything. People can go 60 in a 45 if they want while the cop sits and watches. This town is so lousy. I just hope and pray that man didn't get out of jail on bail...

    @Pinguinageddon that comic is perfect!
  • Wow OP I'm sorry you have had to deal with all of that. I agree you should try to find a safer area to move to. I live in a small town too, but thankfully we've had no terrible crimes here. I do live about 45 min from a very large city that is extremely crime ridden, and I work in this city. It makes me appreciate where I live so much more! I feel the same way sometimes, that its a scary world to bring a child into, but as others have mentioned, the world is also a beautiful place and we can't let fear rule our lives.
  • I agree that it's scary, but we can't live in fear. I remember having these same thoughts with my first when the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary happened. I teach 1st grade and had told my kids that day I was expecting. It hit me hard and still does to this day. I can't copy the link, but there's a beautiful video of a father talking to his son on USA today. Check it out...you can Google usa today father son Paris and it should come up. Sorry I can't include it here.
