1st time mommy what to expect at 1st dr appt

Hi there! I am so nervous I go in to the dr early Tuesday morning in approximately 8 weeks 1 day but I think I may be behind that due to having an irregular period.

I so badly want to have an ultrasound to hear the heart beat and see the baby will this happen what can I expect? I so badly need to hear the baby the fine to ease my anxiety.

  • I'm from Canada so depending on where you're from, your first visit might be very different!

I had bloodwork, a urine test, they weighed me, took my blood pressure and asked me about my LMP. I have a pretty regular cycle so that makes me ineligible for an ultrasound until 11-13 weeks here (and it was ultimately scheduled for 13 weeks :( -- so far away!). If you aren't sure how far along you are, you should have no problem getting a dating ultrasound either at the visit or very shortly thereafter.

    Good luck!

  • My first appointment was an ultrasound to confirm viability and the doctor talking to us about all of the testing options that will come up in the next 8 months/which are relevant to us and which might be a good idea to pursue vs not pursue. My next appointment is at 10 weeks and I'll have blood work run to check for anemia, blood type, rubella and varicella immunity, urinalysis for proteins, sugars and UTIs, and a pap. At some point, my state requires a bunch of STD testing as well, not sure when that goes down but its in my packet of paperwork the doctor gave me. Some doctors combine these into 1 appointment, some don't.
  • Most likely routine bloodwork, pelvic exam, urine sample, checking bp. Also giving/receiving a bunch of info. Also depends on your doctors office. Mine did an ultrasound at my first appointment to find hb. Some do, some don't. And just as PP said, if you're not sure how far along you are I'm assuming they'll do an ultrasound at your appointment or sometime soon after.
  • I also have my first appt Tuesday at 8 wks, 1 day. I desperately want to hear the heartbeat. My symptoms have lessened quite a bit this week, which freaks me out. Do you think I should ask ahead of time? I'm not as concerned about the ultrasound, though obviously I would like that to. I just need confirmation that there is a baby growing inside me! My H is coming with me and if it's just gonna be weight and blood testing, there's no use having him take time off from work.

I don't think there is anything wrong with calling and asking if there will be an ultrasound. When I scheduled my second appointment, I explicitely asked if there would be another ultrasound because I would want my husband there if there was. They totally understood and were happy to answer.
  • If they don't automatically do an ultrasound, just say your cycle is irregular and you don't know how far along you are, and ask for a dating ultrasound to find out for sure. Depending on your doctor they made do it there, or send you to an imaging lab for it. 8 weeks is a great time to do a dating ultrasound so you shouldn't have to wait too long!
  • I know each doctor's office does appointments differently, but at my first appointment they did weight, blood pressure, asked about LMP, and a urine test. Then i saw my doctor and she did an internal exam, breast exam, and ultra sound. She said that if i was due for a pap, she would have done that. Then I had blood drawn for regular prenatal tests. She also talked about testing we can do, the processes in the office (e.g., doctors being on call and the other OBs in the office), and answered any questions.

    Good luck at your appointment!
  • Just remember the first ultrasound is usually done vaginally. So they stick a dildo cam up there. One of my friends had no idea and was quite surprised ;)

  • I really think that every office is different.  Ours did blood work, pelvic exam, std testing, urine sample, normal vitals and did an ultrasound.  It was also comprehensive question/answer type thing too.

  • Yes, lots of doctors operate differently. However if you are unsure of your dates then they will most likely do an u/s,

My doc does u/s' at every appt and she delivered my other 3 babies, so she didn't really go over much with me other than to make sure I was taking my prenatals and to tell me no raw fish and no alcohol.
I go back this week (can't wait!! and we will double check the due date, baby was so tiny last visit (6wks) she wants to reconfirm this time.) and she will send me for all the blood work then.
Good luck at your appointment :)
