IVF in Michigan / no Insur Coverage - Help, need advice!

Does any one here have experience with IVF in Michigan? It looks like our 3rd IUI is a BFN, so I am preparing myself for the IVF talk that is coming. Our insurance does not cover anything infertility related. Does anyone have any advice on how to navigate the financial side of this? We have some savings, but not enough to cover a full round. I can not imagine spending that kind of money if it does not work. My inlaws live in Europe, so I am really considering seriously looking into going over there for IVF. Any advice wpuld be greatly apprecited. I feel so devistated right now. I really thought this IUI was going to work.

Re: IVF in Michigan / no Insur Coverage - Help, need advice!

  • I'm in Michigan, I saw Dr Hammoud at IVF Michigan. (All of their doctors and staff are amazing) My first appointment they went over the costs with me and different financial aids available. There are quite a few options out there to get assistance. Most of it is income based, but some are not. Where in Michigan are you located? I have leftover meds I'm totally willing to donate.

The Fertility Clinic has an IVF assured program, you only pay if you conceive. If you don't, you are refunded the amount for the actual IVF (there are other fees that aren't covered so you'd have to look into that as well), but the 14,000 you pay is refunded if it isn't successful. There's more info on their website. You can google them! They have locations all over MI. Good luck!!

  • @beckihall I will email you this evening, things have been a little crazy over here. If you have extra meds I would love to chat with you about them!! I just got off the phone with my clinic and I am a bit over whelmed with all the costs and on top of it they must be paid in advance.

@alqizwik thank you for the information!!! I am going to look into them and set up an appointment, we wanted second opinions anyway so that is great!! Thank you so much!!

  • Also, there are other clinics in other states that be cheaper too (with good success rates).  Someone on here mentioned one down in the Caribbean (or one of the islands down there).  So it's like a vacay and IVF in one.   Just start googling.
  • This content has been removed.
  • I'm also seeing Dr Hammoud at IVF MI. I'm not sure about the cost about getting financial help for IVF but I know that the pharmacy they use has a program called compassionat car that will give you 25-75% off of meds. It's crazy expensive but they have really high success rates!
  • @alexiskiriluk it's so exciting to find someone who also sees Dr. Hammoud! I don't have enough great things to say about him!
  • @beckihall me too!!! I would send you a pm but don't know how. We love him. Started at RMA but found IVF to be a better fit! Have you done your transfer? Where are you at?
  • Hi Gals, I'm from south east MI also. We just had our first failed IUI, and we will be switching RE's to Dr. Mersol-Barg with Michigan Reproductive Medicine.

@alqizwik Is it common to not have to actually pay for IVF if it does not work? Or is this something that only The Fertilty Clinic does?
  • I'm in Toledo, but my Dr works with Dr. Hammoud in Michigan as well. Dr. Shamma. He's been great. I haven't done IVF, but he's been very supportive through my fertility treatments.
  • @::cherish~love:: I don't know how common it is. I first heard about it through an article I seen on the Grand Rapids location. That was actually the article that got us to consider fertility treatments. I searched programs in MI like this, and they were the only one to pop up. Honestly, I'm so happy we chose them. I love how straight forward and understanding they are. They get straight to the point, they want you to conceive as badly as you do. GL to you.

  • Thank you for the info ladies. We see Dr. strickler, he comes very highly recommended. We have an apt with his this morning, and I will be scheduling apts at a few other clinics on Friday to get some other opinions. I am really just tired of all of this...

  • So glad I came across this post. I to will be going to Michigan ivf once I get my referral from the doctors. It sucks that Michigan does not have any insurance for infertility. For those who have seen the doctor do you think their quick to get in or is it a long wait ?

  • @alexiskiriluk that's okay, I don't know how to PM either and in on a mobile phone. I did already have my transfer, I just like to poke in on this board to offer any advice, positive vibes, or answer questions for people. I was seeing him at the Dearborn and Bloomfield offices. I live downriver.
  • I live in Michigan too and my health Insurance doesn't cover infertility expenses, I am SO thankful I found this post! Thanks for all the info everyone!
  • @beckihall so....did it work? How many times did you transfer and how many did you transfer. I'm going to see Hammoud tomorrow to remove a polyp. Really nervous!! Waiting to start meds and do retrieval until after Christmas.
  • @alexiskiriluk it did work **bfp mentioned***

We transferred two embryos and both our little babies stuck. (I couldn't believe it worked on the first try!) I'm 18 weeks pregnant with a boy and girl.

I never want to come across as being insensitive to those who are still fighting to get pregnant, but I do want to show women that you can be successful. The infertility struggle is something that can be beat!
  • I'm in Northern Michigan (no REs here) so I use The Fertility Center in GR. I've read about programs through the center but I've also Googled "IVF Grants" to see what other organizations might have something we can apply for. Good luck!
  • @Caroline351 that's where I go too. They're a great office for anyone who may be considering them. FX you ladies find a great team to help you on your journeys!!

  • @alqizwik, that's awesome! Because I'm remote, I RARELY see anyone from the office, but the nurses are so nice and they are always quick to respond. We originally met with Doctor Dodds and I really liked him. Next month a different doctor is coming up, I'm hoping he's as great. Good luck to you!
