Nespresso-like machine for baby formula?

I have every intention to exclusively breastfeed for 6 months if I am able. But when it's time for formula, I'm loving this concept of "baby-Nespresso"! :D Thoughts?

Haha, I am also planning on breastfeeding until 6 months and beyond if I am able to, but this is awesome! My husband would totally buy this if I showed it to him lol

I plan to breastfeed as well. But that machine is pretty awesome! Maybe I overlooked it, but I didn't see a price. I wonder how much it is?

eta: never mind... just found it. $249!
  • Part of me thinks it's brilliant, another part thinks how lazy can we actually get? And how many oz is in a serving?
  • It looks like the serving size changes over time. Starting at 3 oz for newborns and then up.

I'm intrigued by the concept but think I read somewhere it's hard to clean!

ETA: I'm a FTM but how hard could it be to scoop some powder into some warm water?

  • I just microwaved DDs bottles when we had to switch to formula at 8 months. The fear with microwaving is hot spots, but we added the powder after heating and just shook it, no hot spots. It's a lot of money to spend on an appliance that has no other purpose, cluttering the counter, that has a short lived life span. I'd rather put the money towards a bigger ticket item with a longer life span.

We did this as well. Microwave first then add formula and shake. Worked for us. It's a cool machine, but I can't imagine spending that much on it.

  • I've heard these tend to not seal the formula container well, so it can go bad/clump. We did formula with DD from 5-13 months and never used the microwave, just warm water from the tap.

  • I would wait to see how BF goes before investing in something so expensive for formula. Some moms can pump very easily and produce a lot of milk and you may not even need to use formula. I'm assuming you'll get a good maternity leave in Canada and then probably be allowed pump breaks at work so I'd honestly see how thats going before buying this. I didn't FF so I don't know from personal experience but I have heard from moms who exclusively formula fed that they liked it but it wasn't a necessity. A lot of my friends would also make bottles for the day at once so they would have time for all the bubbles Etc to settle and then just warm before feeding (or some babies took right out of fridge).

Considering everything we have to do when baby arrives, on top of usual household duties, I'll take any help I can get!!!! I have a roomba for the floors, plan to hire a maid to help clean once a week, and a baby formula machine that delivers formula at the right temperature in 1 min and connects with Bluetooth will be right on top of my list too! (I just need to do my research to make sure the formula is actually good for baby, etc).

Dunno how many ounces but they have formula pods for different baby ages, so I suspect it may vary with age?
  • Totally agree that this is a convenience and not a need. I personally don't mind paying for convenience but I will only get it if I formula-feed, and if reviews on the product and formulas are good. Would also need to compare the cost of the formula pods to regular formula. But if all of the items check out, I'd love to get this. Counter space is ok for us and if this is going to add convenience when hubby and I are tired zombies, I don't mind the price.

But one can always register for it and see if a generous soul would contribute, too. :D
  • @thaisac1 Keep in mind that formula isn't a one size fits all with babies. My DD was supplemented in the NICU with formula at first when I couldn't be there and the nurses suspected she had a slight milk sensitivity so we ended up using Similac Sensitive and then a store brand of the same. Plenty of moms go through several different formulas before finding one that works for their baby (like one they won't throw up, easy on the stomach, easy to digest, etc.). You want to make sure baby boy can take the formula the machine uses.

That being said...SO jealous of a maid to help clean, that is something I covet like craaaaazy, even now! Lol

That's good to know! I wonder if this would trigger Nestle to come up with different formula pods for babies with lactose intolerance, etc etc… They have definitely done it with Nespresso (lots of different coffee intensities, and a variety of decafs) to please everyone… Wouldn't be surprised if they introduce a variety of formulas too - will keep an eye.

As of right now hubby and I do all the cleaning (errr….. hubby >>>>> I  :D ), but I can totally see how a maid once or twice a week would come in handy when baby arrives. One of my friends who is also a physician once told me "If you are going to be a busy working mom, use the extra income to hire someone to help around the house, so you can have more time with the baby." Although I plan on taking 6 months off, I am working like crazy before delivery; and for sure will be swamped with work when I go back from mat leave… So I'm taking my friend's advice to heart.
  • I exclusively breastfed so I am not sure how that appliance would work out.

As far as housework after baby, it's not so bad to keep up with if you do a little at a time. I would recommend letting it go for the first week or two. With DD I used to do 10 mins of house work after she went down for naps and then either sleep myself or continue cleaning/doing stuff around the house.

  • I usually just made formula bottles on demand with room temp water. Heating was a PITA and not always convenient if we were on the go so I tried not to go down that road if possible.

  • Echoing what @imrachellea said - Eli went from BF to 4 different types of Enfamil, tried Similac at once point, eventually back to Enfamil and a store brand - I wouldn't like being tied to one specific producer of formula because it doesn't always work out all smoothly. It would be interesting to see other brands put their products in the same format to allow for more versatility. I'd hate to spend all that money on something and not be able to use it for that reason. Although, as interesting as I find it, I honestly wouldn't even consider spend that much for that machine anyway to do something that takes the same amount of time on my own.
  • I'm all for convenience over necessity if you can afford it (we're getting a night nurse lol). I was under the impression that these machines could use any formula that you scoop in and it measures it for you, I didn't know it used pods. Want me to ask on ds's fb BMB group? I know women in there loved it.

But like I said, I would wait to see how bf is going since you may not need it.

If you're getting a housekeeper for when baby comes make sure to ask if they'll do laundry (not all do), and this is not traditional, but ask if they'd be willing to do some cooking the first couple weeks to help you out! Also ask if they'd be comfortable if you went to run a quick errand while baby is sleeping. Again, not a traditional duty, but def an added perk.

  • @NachosAndPeaches If you could ask that would be great, I'd love to hear opinions.

My husband works from home, so that in itself will be helpful if I need to run an errand etc. :)
  • We have a zephyrhills dispenser at home and just use half hot water and half cold and that makes the bottle the perfect temp. Our only issue was DS refused to take a bottle unless it was warm. This time around I'll make bottles a little cooler so we don't have the headache of trying to warm one up when we are out.

@thaisac1 I think the machine is pretty brilliant and Hell Yea on the roomba. We have one and DH wants to buy a second for our house which I dont even think is that big.

Love roomba. I want to get a scooba too, but waiting for the next model to be released cause the current model only cleans a certain square footage at a time, and my living/dining/ kitchen area is bigger than that square footage. So I'm hoping they release a new version soon, which means no more mopping!
  • That machine looks awesome . Only thing i see as a negative is the fact that you are limited to the formula brand(s) that use the cups. However just using it for the hot water isn't a bad option and you can just scoop whatever formula baby tolerates

  • Back to the issue of "what if baby doesn't like this formula?"... Looks like the product has a 90-day money back guaranteed. So if they don't like it, send it back. Which is good to know.

Can you tell I love gadgets? :)

That's awesome. DH is already loving it as well and the first thing he said was "It's Nespresso for babieeeees, WANT" :P
But I don't know if we will need it so I will wait and see how it goes with breastfeeding :P

That's right, BF first and foremost!
  • This is what I used and I absolutely loved it. Nothing to clean. Basically you just pour boiling water into it the top and it comes out the bottom at the perfect temp, straight into the bottle.

  • I loveeeee it! My husband claims it's the best baby item we ever got!
It's suuuuuper easy to use. The formula powder goes in the top. There's a guide in the manual that tells you what sifter goes with the formula you use. When you assemble the top (it's like 4 pieces that you snap together) this piece will go into it.
The water goes into the tank on the side. There's a temperature light at the top that will turn green when it's ready. The only time it's not green is when you refill the tank or turn it on.
You can select the amount to make - 2, 4, 6, or 8oz then you push the start button. It comes out perfect every time!!!

I know there's a YouTube video of it so you can see how it works! It's the Baby Brezza Formula Pro.

  • I see the fascination with such a gadget as an instant formula maker. It strongly looks like a baby keurig and for technology, I would say that's the bee's knees and I do think it's amazing. I just can't see myself spending $249 for it and then keeping up with buying their formula. Walmart has a Baby Brezza that uses regular formula for $142 but Jet.com also sells it for $138.88 plus a 15% off your first order.
Nifty! But $249??? Eek!! I'll think I'll stick with my teapot and protein shakers...

    My thoughts exactly.

I usually just made formula bottles on demand with room temp water. Heating was a PITA and not always convenient if we were on the go so I tried not to go down that road if possible.

We started out using warm filtered water from the faucet until about 8 months and then we went right to luke warm / room temp tap water. After awhile we learned how to mix the formula without clumps and it was fine for us.

I'm a little confused about your wording of "when it's time for formula"... you do realize that there's no need for formula, right? Honestly, if you breastfeed successfully for six months, at that point it will likely be easier for you to just continue with breastmilk while introducing solids and skip spending the money on formula altogether! If you need it (or choose to use it) because breastfeeding isn't for you that's all good and well... but definitely don't bank on using it for sure if you're pretty set on breastfeeding for 6 months! That's the point where it gets really easy :-)

I absolutely hope breastfeeding is for me. :) I guess I assumed that once I have to go back to work, formula would be used at some stage as I am not sure about my ability to pump enough to supply the child's demand (I consider it a win if I am able to properly feed and hydrate myself during work! So I guess I am already being a little pessimistic about my ability to pump).
    We'll play it by ear!
  • I have the baby breeza and I LOVE it!!! I bought it with my last baby. It is by far the best purchase I have made. It is so fantastic. Perfectly measured and warmed every time. I've been using it for 8 months now. I highly recommend it!
