Cramping is a good sign, right?

I have had BH off and on for weeks now but today I am having more painful cramping.  I feel like my period will start at any minute.  I'm hopeful this means progress (?)  My doc does not do internals so I'm feeling in the dark about when this kiddo is coming. 

For those of you who've done this before, does this sound like early labor progress?  Thanks!

I've had that off and on and nothing is happening yet, but it might be progress for you. I hope it is!

I've had it off and on since 34 weeks.  I've been having timeable contractions with menstrual cramps and back pain since Saturday.  It's early labor.
