LO won't take pacifier

My LO is 5 weeks and isn't very into a pacifier. I've tried every day for a couple weeks, usually when she isn't already super fussy as then she just gets more angry. Sometimes she'll suck on it a little bit but I always have to hold it in her mouth and she doesn't suck for long if at all. I love to be able to use one to help her fussiness. Any tips? I use Soothies, haven't tried other brands yet...

Re: LO won't take pacifier

  • I'd definitely suggest trying other brands! I had 3 different types to try with my LO AND the only ones she would suck on were the Soothies. And even then I had to hold it in until she learned how to suck on it a little better. It still falls out a lot but she's getting the hang of it! I just bought a Wubbanub for her, it's a soothie attached to a small stuffed animal that helps the pacifier stay in her mouth!

  • Please let me know if you like the WubbaNub. My little girl is the same way with pacifiers I found she likes the nuk brand. But if she falls asleep with a pacifier she wakes up as soon as it falls out
  • I'm still working on it with this LO, but my 2 boys never took a pacifier :(. Rough at this stage, but I was thankful never to have to go through weaning them off them!

  • My LO definitely prefers MAM pacifiers over the soothie and other kinds. Also, this might sound obvious, but make sure you are using the right size. Someone gave me a pack of 6m+ pacifiers and I didn't notice the size; my daughter kept spitting it out. When I looked at it in comparison to the other binkies it was way too big for her mouth.
  • Hm! I honestly didn't know there were different size pacifierd!
  • My guy likes the MAM pacifiers. But like a previous poster said later on its nice not having to wean the pacifier. I've breastfed all my boys. With my first son, my breast was the pacifier, but it was ok because I was a stay at home mom with only him. Second son he took a pacifier and we got rid of it before he was a year old but I didn't like trying to find the pacifier, and helping him find it at night, plus they're kinda germy. I don't have time to be a human pacifier so I just kept trying with this lil guy when he was a little bit cranky and seemed to want to sleep and suck. He is 5 weeks and seems to expect it now.
  • My friends daughter wouldn't take one until grandma ran it under warm water (so it wasn't cold in her mouth). That trick worked for her
  • Agreed with trying a different brand. My LO much prefers avent pacifiers. The kind that has a really big base since they can't really hold them in yet. They're also great because those ones are hollow so you can put your finger tips in it so give the baby something to chomp on which takes better.
  • We have tried three different brands (all 0-2 months) and she is 2 months now - has never taken it! She spits it out or screams because she hates it so bad. She loves to suck on my hand though... It will be rough when I go back to work!
