3rd Trimester

Nervous about my induction.

I am now over 40 weeks pregnant, and my doctor set the date to induce me Sunday. Let me just say--I really want to have this baby. I am miserable as most people are at the end of pregnancy. However, I am not dilated. They said I am very soft, but I am still closed tight. This aparently makes the risk of a csection or the chances of it not working higher. I don't want a csection. I am pretty nervous... I have tried natural ways (sex and walking), but that didn't work. I know people don't think natural ways of inducement is good, but I just wanted to try it.

Anyone ever been induced when their cervix was closed?? Advice? Anything to calm me down?

Re: Nervous about my induction.

  • I have no experience with this. This is my first baby but I just wanted to say that you can do this!! C section may sound terrible, but at the end of the day you'll be holding your baby and it won't matter how they got here! Good luck and congratulations!! Your baby will be here in a matter of hours!

  • Is there a medical reason to induce? is your Dr willing to let you go to 42 weeks?

I agree with pp that whatever way it swings it really won't matter in the grand scheme of things once you're holding your baby, but if you're feeling anxious and there's no medical reason to induce then why not see if you can push it further out?

    Best wishes

  • I was induced, and, I am not saying this to scare you, it went terribly and I wound up with an emergency c-section after 12 hours of intensely painful labor because baby was in distress and his head was stuck and wedged sideways in my pelvis. I was terrified of a c-section as well (which is partly why we induced...LO's head was measuring at 42+ weeks when I was 36 weeks and I had a hip injury that would have made delivery with a normal sized baby head difficult), but, honestly, at the end of the day, being able to hold my little guy made it all worth it. I'd had my heart set on a natural, unmedicated delivery, so exactly NOTHING went as planned, but at the end of the day it doesn't matter because he made it out safely.

If there's no medical reason to induce, see if you can push it back a bit longer. Prepare yourself for the possibility of a c-section...that was probably the best thing that DH and I did...that way, if it comes to that, you're already mentally there. It helped to take away a lot of the fear for me personally.

  • With my DD I was induced. I am a type 1 diabetic and I had low amniotic fluid. I was induced at 39 weeks.
I was 1 cm dilated when I went in the night before. I had Cervadil to ripen my cervix. Then at 8am they took out the Cervadil and started me on pitocin. I had a picture perfect vaginal induction. I did have an epidural.

I was induced and still ended up with an emergency c-section. From my experience, having experienced both, the pain of labour is so much more intense when you are induced. I was 0cm/closed cervix when I was induced and it took 8 hours to get to 7cm. I was induced because there was meconium in my waters and they needed to get baby out asap, I ended up with a c-section because after 8 hours of labour they discovered she was breech. I also planned an unmedicated water birth so my birth plan went out the window within 10 seconds of getting to the hospital. Sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do, saying that I would still question your doctor as to why you are being induced at 40 weeks when you can go to 42 weeks before it becomes medically necessary.
  • I asked to be induced with my second and third baby. I was already over EDD with both and chose to induce because of their size. I can honestly say I had easy labors with all my children. Labor for all my kids were only 2 hours each with my first was close to 3. My contractions did not start off any different then when I went into labor naturally with my first. Luckily I did have all vaginal births and did not need a c-section. But I have heard horror stories about inducement.

I was induced with my first baby. I was closed up tight at all cervical checks, even at 41 weeks. I told my OB that I would go to 41, but not 42 weeks. I was admitted to the hospital on a Monday evening, had Cervidil put in around 7:30 pm. Next morning, I was put on Pitocin and my doctor then broke my water. I had my daughter vaginally a little after 4pm that Tuesday. She was 8lb 11 oz. I'm glad that I didn't wait until 42 weeks because she had swallowed meconium and had to be suctioned and cleared out for a half hour before I got to hold her.

Bottom line: not every induction is a horror story or will lead to a C-section.

We have been discussing induction with this baby if he looks to be going over, as well. I've got 5 more weeks.

  • I was induced with my first baby at 39 weeks due to a pregnancy rash (PUPP) and was slightly effaced and "fingertip" when I went in. They used Cervadil and then Pitocin the next morning. Had a 12 hour labor, but baby did great and I had a vaginal birth. I think your chance of c section will be higher if they think your baby is on the large size, but it just depends on what your body does the day of. Several of my friends have been induced on/just past their due date and only one has ended up with a c section;however she would have always had one due to a cervix that wouldn't dilate completely. I agree with pp that you should prepare for either option. I hope everything goes well for you!
  • I was induced 8 or 9 days after my dd ...... Was 0 dialated and had nothing more than menstral- like cramps....i 12 hour labor, got an epideral, pushed for about 20 minutes and had an 8 lb 11 oz baby ( and I'm only 5'3)..... My sister waited only 2 days after dd to be induced and had a short 6 hour vaginal labor... It's dif for everyone. Best of luck to you!
  • I was induced with my DD at 42 weeks and was still closed up tight.  She came out fine without a c-section.  Everyone is different.  I hope everything goes well for you!
