3rd Trimester

I've caught chicken pox at 32 weeks...

Apparently I'd never had it as a child and yesterday was diagnosed with chicken pox and spent the evening on the labour ward in quarantine while they checked me and baby over. Thankfully my little boy is absolutely fine and very healthy, but I'm starting to suffer a bit. Does anyone have any natural remedies for the itching other than calamine lotion? I am planning on getting some tomorrow but will be unable to today. I have many lesions on my upper body and the worst ones are actually on my vagina (TMI sorry!) but they are excruciatingly itchy... Any advice would be appreciated!

  • Okay thank you I'll definitely look into that vaccine - the midwives told me that my baby will have dormant chicken pox virus when born that may develop into shingles in his first few years of life.
  • I am so sorry and certainly hope that he doesn't get shingles!
  • Ugh I'm sorry... Chicken pox are the worst when you're older. I was a young teen when I got them. Ask your doc if you can use calamine lotion. Worked wonders for me.
  • Unfortunately the shingles vaccine isn't FDA-approved for patients under 50 :( I've had the shingles and it could have definitely been worse, but they aren't pleasant. FX for you that your symptoms resolve quickly and that your LO stays healthy!!

  • No advice but my sympathy, that is a crappy thing to deal with at any time, let alone the third trimester. Hope you have speedy recovery!

  • I'm pretty sure Benadryl is safe in pregnancy and will help with the itching, obviously double check with the doctor first!

  • Thanks everyone I've got some calamine and a special cooling gel the pharmacist said was safe to use. This is absolute torture for me but baby is fine, he won't actually have chicken pox in the womb just a dormant virus I believe. Can't wait for the itching to stop!!
  • Eurgh that truly sucks, hope you feel better soon!!!

  • Ugh. I'm sorry - chicken pox sucks. Aveeno oatmeal bath helped when I got it years ago. I was on my pity pot for having bronchitis for 2 months straight, but chicken pox is way worse (at least it was for me). So sorry you have to deal with this.
  • Thank you for all your support, it's lovely to have a bit of sympathy as so many people forget that chicken pox affects adults much worse than children! Luckily I was put on a course of antivirals called aciclovir which have definitely shortened the duration of the virus, I'm feeling basically normal now and the pox spots are beginning to crust over and heal. Never felt more attractive in my whole life haha! Baby is doing well and is still very active, thank goodness :)
