Moxibustion

Hey, I was posting as Mamacat315 but had to make a new account. It's still me :)

I'm 28 weeks and baby is breech. I know there is still plenty of time for him to flip, but I was doing some cursory research into moxibustion. Anyone try it with a previous pregnancy? Did it work?

Re: Moxibustion

  • I had to go look this up because I had never heard of it. It seems pretty woo woo to me.
And it's too early to worry about this. Baby has plenty of time to flip.

  • I can't see why it works, but like PP said baby has plenty of time to flip. I don't think any body should be worrying about beech positioning. It might be good to add to your just in case files if its for you. Chiropractic care and spinning babies as well.

  • Also, I am pretty sure that baby does what it wants until 30-34 weeks, then it starts moving head down. There is just too much room to flop around in there until then.

  • Thanks guys. It's incredibly popular where I live and you have to book like months in advance at the "good places", which is why I'm asking now. My last baby was breech till like 32 weeks, then flipped on his own. I really want to avoid a section if I can.
  • I was planning to try it, but was sectioned at 37w due to complications (and couldn't be induced because she was frank breech).

I did try going to a chiro that was trained in a certain technique that is supposed to give them more room to turn (can't remember what it's called). I also laid upside down on a board leaned against my couch seat 3+ times a day towards the end, changed my sitting position, spend a lot of time on the exercise ball, etc. Nothing worked. She was pretty wedged in there.

See if your practice will do an external version towards the end if it's something you're interested in. But like everyone has said, it's still really early to be thinking about turning baby. My current baby turns around at least once a week at this point (that I notice).

  • I meant to say I can see why it would work not can't.
  • I don't know anything more about it except the ancient Chinese came up with it to treat various medical conditions right? I was surprised to see a post with this title ... Heading to Google now :)
  • I have good luck with acupuncture and I know it often goes along with that so it's on my list if this guy doesn't flip! It can't hurt, right?

I didn't realize people were so skeptical of Chinese medicinal practices. I lived in China for a long time and spent my last pregnancy there, so I'm kind of down with whatever.

Not to sound rude, but I'm not really interested in your opinions about moxibustion, especially if you just Googled it! I really want to hear from anyone who's tried it.
  • We tried it with my last pregnancy when my son was breech. I was a little suspect but my ob said there were fairly high success rates. It didn't work for us but we didn't find out about it until I was 37 weeks...there wasn't much room in there to turn by that point! It was super easy so I wouldn't hesitate to try it again.
  • My first son flipped at 38 weeks after Webster technique at the chiro. That was after a failed ECV, so I'm a believer in Webster. I had looked into moxibustion but didn't end needing it. My second child was head down early and stayed that way. We'll see what this one does.

Not sure this is directed at me but I am in no way planning to give my opinion on it. I was commenting more like "hey I've never heard of this and I'm interested in finding out more so I'm going to do some research and follow the thread". I don't know how my baby is positioned currently but if I find him/her to be breech I will also be looking at as many options to flip as I can find!
  • @charliegoldengirl no worries, not directed at anyone! Just wanted to hear from people with experience with this, not just like, "oh, that sounds weird."

@MississippiCatfish I've heard the Webster technique is crazy painful. Did you think so?
  • No, I think there's a good chance you may be remembering incorrectly. The external cephalic version, which they attempt in the hospital after giving you uterine relaxing drugs and under constant fetal monitoring, is very painful. I'm sure every woman's experience is different, but I would say it's the most painful thing Ive experienced next to childbirth, and I've heard others agree.

Webster technique feels more to me like a massage than a chiropractic adjustment. They literally work on the ligaments under your belly in a way that feels like a massage. No pain at all. I'd encourage you to check it out on YouTube! I watched a few videos and had no fear going into it. I actually went back to the same chiro toward the end of my second pregnancy, just to make sure things were looking okay, even though he was in a good position. I would highly, highly recommend it if needed.

I didn't find the chiro/Webster painful. Like @MississippiCatfish said, I think it's a good option. It didn't work for me, but it certainly can't hurt anything.

  • @MississippiCatfish @VitaLuna I definitely confused the the two. Good to know it's not unpleasant. I'm pretty optimistic that this kid will flip on his own, though.

Totally.  Good info to have, but baby still has so much room and time to flip!
