I've always done Zumba, yoga, and free weights prior to pregnancy. Love fitness and healthy eating! I am about 5-6 weeks pregnant with Baby #2. Tonight was Zumba cardio and during the workout I felt fine and was pushing myself like I always do. We did do a lot of jumps, turns, salsa, etc. My body is used to it! But after Zumba, I felt dizzy for the first time ever! I sat down on a chair at the gym and just rested. Drive home I had to pull over because I still needed to cool down. I had not eaten a real snack since lunch time-which is not like me. I am always eating 2-3 hours. My guess was that I overworked myself and low blood sugar due to pregnancy. It's hard to slow down since I am not feeling pregnant yet. I have no symptoms other than sore breasts. Has anyone ever had this dizziness after workouts happen? With my first I did a lot of walking and stuck to just that as my workout. I'm a teacher so with my first, my classroom was upstairs so I did 2 sets of stairs every day about 3-4 times a day also. Any suggestions for workouts? I have learned myself a lesson that's for sure. To just listen to your body! Maybe I need to stick to yoga and light workouts. What do you do for workouts?
Re: Fitness/Workouts in 1st trimester
I always told the instructor at the start of the class that I was pregnant and positioned myself near a door in case I needed to leave. And I rarely hit the goals that were set for me (I do a lot of spinning), but I felt like being there and even doing half of it was better than nothing.
I did mostly yoga and barre my first tri. Now mixing in some rowing and spinning back in- but, like I said, at a bit slower pace
You can do anything your body is used to, other than heated activities (like hot yoga). Make sure that you drink a LOT of water while working out though. That might get rid of the dizziness. Also, be aware that as the pregnancy continues you will get tired sooner and will have to alter some exercises to work with your changing body. As long as you listen to your body you should be fine.
Also, be aware that high impact activities are fine to do but might cause some cramping afterwards. It's not dangerous, your body is just reacting to them differently than it used to.
When i got pregnant i was running, going to spin classes, and doing pilates and hot yoga. As soon as i got my positive test, i switched to prenatal yoga. About 10 weeks in, i brought my runs indoors to the elliptical because the cramping annoyed me and i had gotten so slow it wasn't worth it to be outside anymore. I cut out the spin classes once the bikes became uncomfortable, around 7 months. I continued pilates and running on the elliptical until i went into labor (note: i did private pilates lessons, so the exercises were tailored specifically to where i was in my pregnancy, and what i could physically still do as the pregnancy progressed).
