acid reflux

my doctor said I can take anything I over the counter for acid reflux. tums and Zantac 150 mg don't work on me, what else is the best for acid reflux? anyone tried gaviscon, liquid or tablets?
and if you tried the liquid, I thiught we weren't supposed to take pepto so why is liquid gaviscon ok?

Re: acid reflux

  • The only thing that has helped me (and I've tried most of them) is Prevacid. Instead of treating the heartburn, it prevents it from being produced. It takes a couple of days to fully work, but it is amazing to be able to sleep without waking up choking on stomach acid!

  • Almond milk really helps with me. I just drink that and use Tums.

  • My doc said Prilosec OTC. Wasn't cured, for sure, but was much better. That, some tums, and really monitoring my food and drink intake before bedtime hours got me through my last pregnancy.
  • @Emott13 it isn't only bedtime it's all day
  • My doctor and I discussed this, and if Zantac hadn't worked for me, I was going to start re-taking the Prilosec that I was taking BEFORE I was pregnant.  If you do choose to do this, you have to make sure you take it every day.  You can't take it the same way you take Zantac (when symptoms arise).

Try your best to avoid triggers (although, when pregnant, it seems like everything is a trigger).  Specifically, tomato-based foods, caffeine, spicy foods, etc.

  • I use a combo of a prevacid a day, and then gaviscon as needed. I have really bad GERD even when not pregnant, so I feel like I've tried everything.
I recommend getting the chewable Gaviscon in the original flavor. It's sort of vanilla-y. (They remind me of these glucose tabs I took when I did a cleanse one time.) They are totally bearable. They also work almost immediately.
If you start taking something like a prevacid or prilosec, be really strict about taking it the same exact time every day, and DON'T SKIP!
I'm not kidding. If I miss one day, it's a 3-4 day recovery period.

Finally, research an acid-reflux diet. The big triggers for me are acidic foods (ugh, pineapple, why do I love you so much?,) but I do OK with tomato, spicy foods, and the biggest culprit are heavy-fat, slow to digest foods, like really marbled meats. The tradeoff is worth it most of the time.
  • My doctor ended up prescribing me famotidine, which is basically pregnancy safe Pepcid. I take it once a day and I feel so so much better.
  • Apple cider vinegar.

I know how it sound, but seriously, just the equivalent of one shot totally helps.
Not gonna lie, it's painful for about 5 seconds then I'm completely fine.
  • I have raging reflux all the time. Now it's worse... So 300 mg of zantac twice a day. A&W root beer... Must be that brand, help keep air bubbles out of my stomach... A chewable pepcid tablet or liquid gaviscon mid day if needed. Also, lots of fiber... Our digestive system has slowed, and fruits, veggies, bran ( I found some yummy fiber one bars for snacks) helps keep it all moving instead of backing up. It still gets bad, but getting better. GOOD LUCK!
  • Prilosec. 8D
  • I'm having buttermilk and it helps !
  • I get awful heart burn before I get acid reflux.
Have some milk, take a ''rennies' heart burn tablet and always sleep on your left side.
  • I discussed acid reflux with my doctor today and he listed the meds that were ok to take, but said it was most important to eat dinner early and to wait as long as possible to lie down after eating. I thought acid reflux was an issue in pregnancy because of the squishing of the stomach and esophagus, but the doctor explained that the relaxin that is released during pregnancy causes the sphincter between the stomach and esophagus to open. So, there is basically no longer a barrier between your stomach and your mouth. I thought that was interesting and aligned with what it feels like for me, and thought I'd share that tidbit in case other people didn't know either.
