I think that with every study there aren't exact causes. It's more correlations between certain variables. There are definitely more factors for a child being smarter than the amount of alcohol your mother drinks during pregnancy- if that was the case the. We should have geniuses all over the place. Same goes for the study I mentioned.
I have not indulged, but I feel like wine has become a craving this pregnancy. It always sounds good and I know I'm going to be super bummed during the holidays when everyone is drinking.
Like others said, it's not worth the risk to me, but I wouldn't judge a glass every once in awhile.
I chugged some NyQuil (which contains alcohol) early early on when I was going through withdrawal from my anxiety meds and hadn't slept at all in 3 days. Not that it helped. But no wine.
ETA: and by chugged I mean nearly a whole bottle. I was desperate.
I am not trying to fear monger, or even say that drinking caused this issue, but a girl I know admitted to drinking wine during pregnancy. Baby was born with some issues which might be an issue for life. She also ate a lot of the "no-nos" that we have all discussed in past threads. Again, I have no way of knowing IF these things affected the baby ,but if that was my child, I would be wondering if I caused it, and have massive guilt.
Moral of the story is, I can do without for 9 months if it means I know I did everything I could do to prevent illness and harm to my child. Of course, disabilities are going to happen, but I never want to wonder if the glass of wine one night I had during PG caused life long issues for my child.
edited to add- I am DYING for a nice glass of Riesling. I plan on packing a bottle in my hospital bag and having a glass the moment I can!

Additional reason I like my birthing center... While they don't explicitly say you can bring any wine/champagne/etc. they did say that people have brought things in the past and they don't say anything. I'm already planning what I want to bring with. Lol.
I have had a few glasses, about one every two weeks. I told my midwife I was probably going to have the odd glass and she said it was fine. I don't see anything wrong with it once and a while but of course people are entitled to their opinions and its your body so who cares what others think. But it hard not to feel judged or guilty I know.
I've had a little champagne for special occasions. By the third tri I might have a glass of wine on occasion. It's quite common to have a glass of wine with dinner in Europe and FAS risk is lowest in the third tri. So I'm not to worried to have a glass on occasion.
I've known a few moms that it had a drink here and there with their pregnancies -just a small glass of wine. They all had healthy children. In my research I've noticed that the guidelines in the US versus Europe etc. are quite different US says none, Europe says the occasional small drink is OK…
Me personally no I have not. My morning sickness is been terrible the Heartburn has been worse than any alcohol is just not appealing. Not to mention I've always been sensitive to it -I smell wine and I'm drunk!
You know, I always assumed I would really miss drinking during pregnancy. However, it really just doesn't ever even cross my mind.
During the first tri I was so sick I definitely couldn't imagine drinking. I was surprised at how easy it was for me, as I was a daily drinker (but only 1-2 drinks a day) before. It's amazing how your body tells you what you shouldn't put into it.
Now, in my second tri, and I'm feeling better and also working long days? Definitely craving my post-work drink. I now allow myself a half a drink with food once or twice a week.
Btw, what kind of alcohol (wine or vodka) doesn't make a difference when it gets processed by your body (in relation to your baby).
I honestly wouldn't- I've taken courses on FAS and don't think it's worth the risk. I know a mom who did when she was pregnant and her toddler son now shows symptoms of FAS (something I would never tell her or diagnose but the symptoms are there). He has a vision disorder and has issues with irritability, antisocial behavior, hyperactivity and has a 'drunk' walk which could be motor skill development. All she had was small amounts of wine. But like the person above me said, you might as well have vodka- your body doesn't tell the difference between different alcohol types.
I've had a few sips of DH's drinks and what would be considered a tasting's amount of wine. Also ordering na beer and there are those in this forum who freak at the thought of something with what amounts to less than .5% alcohol.
During my last pregnancy I was extremely stressed due to trying to purchase a new house at 36 weeks. Yeah I don't recommend that to anyone! My blood pressure started to become elevated. My OB told me to have a small amount of red wine a couple times a week. I don't even like red wine so I mixed it with orange juice. Not sure if I will have wine during this pregnancy or not but it would absolutely not be until the 3rd trimester.
I haven't indulged in this but for what ever reason this pg I have been craving an ice cold beer. Even not pg I have never craved alcohol. I would kill for an ice cold beer right now.

I'm a wine drinker by all means, but I've been craving beer too! My dad recommended N/A Busch, and I tried it. If you like domestic beers, it is a pretty darn good substitute!

They do make non- alcoholic
It's never tasted the same to me. Maybe it will now that I'm pg and have weird tastes for things.

My OB actually recommends a glass of wine here or there after the first trimester, she says it lowers your blood pressure and lessens the chance of getting preeclampsia. I'll have a glass with supper once a week or so, but nothing over the top.
I wasn't going to comment on this again since people were being deemed preachy but the thread is still going so what the heck. I said there is research for both sides and also mentioned a thread of other like minded people. I don't think that people should only hear the "good" side of an argument on such a controversial topic. It shouldn't all be "yep! and everything turned out rainbows and flowers!" There is value in knowing all sides. I have a cousin with FAS to a mother who swears up and down she only had a small drink of wine a few times. No, I don't know for a fact that she isn't a liar but I don't know she isnt telling the truth either. Regardless, I actually feel quite strongly about it but try to remain semi-neutral when talking about it since I personally know and am friends with several ladies who drink wine while prego.
◦no amount of alcohol intake should be considered safe;
◦there is no safe trimester to drink alcohol;
◦all forms of alcohol, such as beer, wine, and liquor, pose similar risk; and
◦binge drinking poses dose-related risk to the developing fetus."
There is just as much research saying its safe as there is saying it isn't. There are several studies that say that full blown FAS only occurs when a mother has more than 4 drinks a day. Lots of people say "My mom did it and I'm fine" and plenty say "Better safe than sorry" I happened choose the former.
I've been craving a glass of wine like crazy ... But I personally feel compelled to abstain (and I'm just 12 weeks). So on my anniversary with my husband I poured pomegranate juice and seltzer into a wine glass and celebrated (he of course had the real stuff although he would have shown solidarity if I wished it). The experience was shockingly satisfying for me. Picture was taken to share with friends, who of course found it equal parts hysterical and pathetic. But apparently I just like wine glasses.
Since Ive been pregnant I have been to a total of 3 bridal showers, 2 adult birthday parties (which I gave away 8 BOTTLES of my FAVORITE wine at to rid myself of temptation), 1 surprise party, 2 weddings, and a reunion...and Im only 4 months this saturday. Yes, I broke down at a wedding and drank half a glass of wine. Not ashamed. Im not a drinker at home and I only have 1 more wedding and my birthday, which will be a spa day (no drinking), so if I only break down once I'm not going to beat myself up over it.
