How would you pronounce Emmaline?

Ladies,

I'm back. Thanks all for your suggestions for our little lady's middle name. We have decided to use a variation of Emily after my sister. Possibly options being:

Emily
Emilia
Emmaline

As previously mentioned - first name will be Odette. Now my question is, do you pronounce Emmaline as 1. Em-uh-leen or 2 em-uh-line (sounds like lime). I prefer Pronunciation number 1 and don't have a problem correcting in the future just wasn't sure what the general consensus is if we chose this option over Emily or Emilia. I'm 8 days from due date and getting excited to meet our little girl!

Thanks!

Re: How would you pronounce Emmaline?

  • I would say em-uh- line, like lime . But I've never heard it pronounced, after I had, I'd pronounce it that way.

  • Line for emmeline not emmelynn
  • Em-ah-line

  • When I visited Australia I met a girl with the name and she pronounced it like emma-leen and spelled it the same way as you did.  I like that pronunciation.
  • I would say it Em-uh-leen.

  • I would pronounce it the way you have in #2.  Putting a silent "e" at the end of a word almost always makes the vowel that precedes it a long vowel.

FWIW, I like Emilia after Odette.  I think it flows well.  Honestly, though, most people actually say a child's middle name so rarely that "flow" isn't the end of the world.

  • I would pronounce it Emma-line.

I think that Odette Emily sounds the best out of the three

  • definitely em-uh-line.

  • My LO is Emaline. Drives me nuts when people call her Em-uh-leen. If I wanted it pronounced that way I would have spelled it that way. As PP wrote the e at the end makes he i say it's name.
  • i would say emma-line. FWIW I would just do Emily. If you're going to honor someone with a MN just use the person's name. No need to change it. Plus Odette Emily flows best. I think Emmaline is a bit much.

  • Em-uh-leen
  • Spelled Emmaline I pronounce it -line. My dd has a little friend named Emilynn which is pronounced -lynn.
  • Reading it I pronounced it Emma-lynn.

  • I say "Emma-line" like lime.

Prefer the sound of Odette Emilia.

If you want to go with Emmaline I wouldn't stress about the punctuation much because people outside of immediate family will so very rarely say her middle name out loud.
  • I would go with the first pronunciation with "leen"
  • Line
