Not enough Fetal DNA

So my nurse just called and told me I have to redo the Harmony test because there was insufficient fetal DNA so they didn't get a test. I asked her what that meant re. health of the baby, and she said it just happens sometimes, and since I did it at 10 weeks (now nearly 13 weeks), I can just do it again tomorrow. Am I being silly for being worried?

You're not silly for being worried, but this happened to my best friend 4 weeks ago, and everything is absolutely fine. Her doctor gave her the same explanation that sometimes it just happens, and that just is not a satisfying answer!!

Thanks! It's not a very satisfying answer, but there you go - thanks for answering :)

  • I asked about this before I had my test done and my genetic counselor told me it happens once in a while because 10 weeks is just at the cusp of when you MIGHT have enough fetal DNA. Some people just won't have enough fetal DNA at 10 weeks, and others will go in at 10 weeks but they are actually 9.5 weeks because dating isn't 100% accurate and so on. You should have enough now. So fingers crossed your test goes smoothly and you get the results you are looking for.
  • My doctor gave me the paperwork for Harmony at 11 weeks but said not to go do it till 13 weeks because they have been getting alot back bad and had to redo when their only 10-12 so I wouldnt worry :)
  • Yup. This happened to me yesterday. I have to go in and have my blood redrawn.
  • Yes I was told by my genetic counselor to wait until after 15 weeks because of this reason.
  • Thanks everyone!

  • I had the same thing happen but it turned out that the lab LOST my sample.

  • @yodamistress Seriously? That's crazy!

  • Happened to me too. They said it happens often, no worries!
  • It's a problem w/the sample vs a problem w/ you or the baby, as mentioned there are reasons why the sample may not have had sufficient DNA - test done too early, the sample was lost, mishandled, they just didn't get a good specimen etc. This can happen w/other blood tests too, it isn't a cause for worry. But it sure would be nice if someone would explain it ahead of time, so you don't worry for no reason!!!
  • @saraleigh2 Right? I do find a lot of this process is almost secretive. I realize it is probably more that the nurses and doctors have done this so many times they forget that some people are new to it, but man does every little thing make my heart stop ...

  • ... And then my second one also came back with "not enough fetal DNA" ... sigh. They did an ultrasound, sprout seems perfectly fine, so the nurses and dr think it just wasn't enough blood, so ... filled 4 vials today, from my very narrow, ridiculously hard to feel veins, and now my arms and hands have bruises galore ... and yet still, I just want it to come back ok :)

  • @AmmyBelle this happened to me as well! Twice now, I'm so frustrated. Going in tomorrow at 13.6 and discussing options. Ugh
  • Hi! I know your comment was a while back. But did you end up having a normal pregnancy and a healthy baby?
