Do you sit in the back seat?

I sit in the back seat with the baby, because I know that the risk of positional asphxia is greatest in her infant seat. I was looking online to see what recommendations might exist about this, and I was shocked that so many people don't. So my question is this: do you sit in the back? If so how long will you?

  • I do because I like to watch him and comfort him if needed. I haven't thought about how long I'd do it for.

  • We both do. Depends who is driving
  • I had no idea that this was even a concern! I sat in back the first 2 weeks but have moved to the front now. DD is 6 weeks old, how long is positional asphxia a concern?
  • I have other children that sit in the back seat so no I don't sit in the back. However I do worry about positional asphyxiation so she has a pulse ox monitor that she wears.
  • I did on the way home from the hospital and the first couple of outings to the doctor, but now I don't. Also, normally I have her by myself if I'm going somewhere, so there no one to sit in the back with her.
  • I had to have a c section and can't drive so when we do go in the car I sit in the back, I can comfort him if he gets upset and I make sure the sun doesn't get in his eyes, and I'm paranoid his head could flip forward
  • I don't know how long I will, but if there are two of us in the car with her, someone is always in the back :)
  • I would do this with our first baby 2 years ago, but don't now. I think I've learned to relax more this time.
  • Who would drive???

j/k.  But seriously, it's a very rare occasion that my husband and I are going somewhere alone with the baby.  We have four kids and work opposite shifts, so it's usually just me and a bunch of kids, or him and a bunch of kids.

  • I sit in the back with my son unless it's only us and I'm driving. I'll probably do it for a few months. He's a month today! Can't believe it.
  • I sit in the back, but really thats just because the front passenger seat is basically unusable because of the carseat behind it.

  • I sit in the back if he is fussy before we leave but if it's just me driving I installed one of those mirrors on the head rest behind his car seat so when I'm driving I can always keep an eye on him. It's a pretty good sized mirror and I can see his blanket rise and fall with his breathing so I feel pretty safe while driving when it's just me and LO

When I had my car seat inspection they made me take the mirror out because it can be a projectile in a car accident.

Interesting, I hadn't heard that before but I can see where there can be concern. Thanks for the heads up. :)

When we had ours car seat talk with the the nurses and tech at the hospital that was one of the many things the tech said not to use
  • I haven't sat in the back since we came home from the hospital. Baby and I both have to get out and about every day so mama doesn't go crazy and baby will actually sleep at night. My husband is working (I'm on mat leave) so it's just me and baby and like someone mentioned, someone needs to drive the car. My son is also extremely strong though so I tend to not panic quite as much. He was born at 9 pounds and would hold his head up without snapping back down within the first few 24 hours.
  • Nope, never! She had a car seat test in the hospital where they had her sit in her seat on the base for 90 minutes while checking her vitals. Everything checked out so they knew she could handle the position of the seat and being in it for short road trips. We haven't had a single problem! At first I was scared because she looked so tiny in that seat but she's 2 months now and nearly doubled in weight!
