Hey I am currently 23 weeks pregnant and haven't gained any weight. Any other women in here still have not gained weight?

Just wondering...What does your doctor say? Is your baby growing appropriately?  What is your body type? Did you start your pregnancy overweight or did you intially lose weight? Sorry for all the questions..LOL.

I'm 22 weeks and have only gained 3 pounds. I started my pregnancy overweight and my doctor isn't concerned. He said the minimum I have to gain is 15 pounds during the entire pregnancy and most of that will be in the last few weeks. I agree with pp, if you are concerned talk to your doctor.

I'm 16 weeks and have lost a total of 12 pounds. My doctor isn't worried about it.

Yes I spoke with my doctor and said the baby is measuring fine but I was trying to see if it something that was normal or something others are going thru.
  • Options
Yes I trust my doctor. The reason I just asked if anyone else is going through it not if it's normal or not. I was not seeking medical advice.

In your other post you said "I was trying to see if it something that was normal"

I know some people who lose weight when they are pregnant because of constant MS and the babies are fine. Others will gain 70lbs and have no issues. Every person and every pregnancy is different.

I'll be 18 weeks on Friday and weigh 16lbs less than when I originally found out I was pregnant due to severe morning sickness. My doctor is okay with it because the baby is healthy and growing. She also thinks my inability to gain weight so far also has to do with my thyroid problems.

I've lost 5lbs since finding out I was pregnant. I'm 14 weeks. I started out a little heavier than I would have liked but not obese. I gained over 50lbs with my first pregnancy 10 years ago so this is new to me. My dr isn't worried so I'm not either. I'm not dieting, I eat when I'm hungry and take my vitamins every day. I'm showing quite a bit so the baby is definitely growing. This entire pregnancy is completely different from my first.

There is no "normal" in a pregnancy. The only thing we all have in common is that we're growing a human (or 2 or 3) inside us. Every woman and every pregnancy are different.

I'm in week 24 and am down 16 pounds. I initially lost 19, gained 6 (when I was unemployed/depressed) and have now lost 1-2 pounds every check in (now that I'm working and being healthy again). I was overweight to start and the doctor is not concerned. She said I have enough reserves to feed the baby even if I'm losing weight. Just be sure to take prenatals!

Umm, not always! Like pp's have said all pregnancies are different. I gained almost 40lbs with my first.. Currently 35 weeks with my second and still 6lbs under my pre-pregnancy weight (not complaining since I have a healthy baby!)

I'm pregnant with twins at 16w and I've so far lost weight. I'm overweight but they're keeping an eye on the sizes of the babies. I'm measuring on track in terms of uterine growth and I've got a growth scan tomorrow (standard for twins at 16w).

That being said, it worried me but the doctors and midwives are happy with all indicators so far. If you're concerned with your food intake perhaps see a dietician or nutritionist that specialises in pregnancy or ask your doctor. If they say if they're happy then you should be ok.

In terms of normal it doesn't exist really. There are guidelines but the weight you put on can be baby, placenta, fluid, fat stores for motherhood/breastfeeding, normal fat gain, muscle, blood and a bunch of other things. It could be your body adjusting or lack of nutrition (through morning sickness etc) or simply how your body responds to pregnancy at this time. These are so individual and so your doctor is the best to ask about your particular situation.

not necessarily... I've only gained 3 lbs but that's because I'm obese to begin with. It's nothing to brag about and if someone is concerned about their weight gain and asks for experiences I provide my perspective, not because I think it makes me seem more desireable or brag worthy but because someone said they wanted to know.

I guess my point is that conversation about size and weight CAN occur without societies expectations that thinner/lighter is better.

My best friend who had a normal BMI gained 16 pounds and had a healthy 7 pound baby. My other friend who was about 5-10 pounds under weight gained 80 and had a 7.5 pound baby. Both are extremes but they both had a child that was about the same size. Everybody is so different. At 19 weeks I'be gone up 10 pounds then down 2, then up 2 etc... Everything is good as long as baby is getting proper nutrients and growing .

    Hello!
I started overweight. I'm 25 wks now. I've lost 30 lbs so far....   just recently (about a month ago) I've started gaining but have since plateaued. Dr isn't concerned, so I'm ok with it I guess. It wasn't because of morning sickness, mine is due to major anxiety issues I've concluded. Just couldn't eat. I'm eating now tho. :) Maybe I'll start gaining again.

@skyrenae if your doctor hasn't had any concerns then you are fine. It sounds like you are right on track to me. A lot of pregnancy weight gain depends on where your body was when you first got pregnant.

Your dr would tell you if this is normal or to be concerned. Even if others had lost weight not gained or gained some it has zero impact on yours and honestly can't really take full comfort in it because who knows if their body type is the same as yours. Every single pregnancy is vastly different and something that is "normal" in one person could be considered "dangerous or worrisome" in another. Try to trust your dr as well as get involved in your bmb they would be closer to you in weeks and more likely to commiserate with you.

Hey I am currently 23 weeks pregnant and haven't gained any weight. Any other women in here still have not gained weight?

I'm right at 16 weeks and have not gained anything either. I have had absolutely no morning sickness through this entire 15 1/2w. So I'm wondering the same thing!!!

If you have had morning sickness, severe or not. My doc has asked me the past few times if I've had any at all because that would be a reason for not gaining anything and actually losing 5lbs of my pre-preg weight. But nothing. She's not concerned though... As long as baby is healthy and growing and has room to grow then all is fine and I wouldn't worry!

Ask your doctor what you can do to try to gain weight though, to ease you worries and stress. And ask him id there COULD be complications from not gaining. Call him/her and just discuss your worries.

There's no reason to ask if you need to gain weight. If your doctor is concerned, your doctor will let you know. If you started out overweight, you need to gain much less than a woman who is under or normal weight. As long as the baby is growing, there's no need to worry. I'm currently 36w3d and I've gained 14 pounds. I started overweight and the only time my doctor has said anything to me about my lack of weight gain was at my last appointment when I hadn't gained anything between appointments.

I just over 12 weeks and have lost a couple of pounds so far. I'm not overweight but so far my midwife doesn't seem concerned. She just told me I need to up my calorie intake from now on, as I should be gaining a pound per week going forward. I'll do my best!

@1faceinacrowd you are still in your first trimester. All doctors and books will tell you before 14 weeks you shouldn't be gaining weight because the baby weight is non existent. Loosing weight in 1st tri is usual with cutting on alcohol, eating healthier and morning sickness... Nothing to write home about

@jolydan I know - that's why my midwife's not concerned. She told me I should've gained 1-5 pounds by 12 weeks, so she pointed out that I lost 3 and need to up my calories but that it's not a big deal.
(it's possible that my history of an eating disorder would lead her to make a comment at all but who knows - like you said, it's normal not to gain at this point)

I just feel really frustrated to hear about comments made by midwives and doctor about little weight difference. You could be wearing a bigger sweater or a pair of jeans that day instead of a legging and cotton t-shirt and it would make a difference. Can we just let women enjoy their pregnancy!!!!

I am currently 35 weeks and my prepregnancy weight was 142. During the first trimester I dropped down to 128 and I now weigh 140.5. This is our 5th baby and every pregnancy my weight gain has been different. If your doctor isn't concerned then it should be fine. But I understand your worries, I still worry that I haven't gained enough but every growth scan and measurements have been great with the baby. I was really worried about it earlier on, just eat healthy (allow for some cravings) and you both should be fine.
