I plan to use disposables until baby is big enough to fit in the one size diapers I have purchased. I didn't want to order different sizes so I went with one size fits all and when he is big enough, we are good to go. We registered for 1-2 packs of newborn diapers and 1-2 packs of 1s just to be safe.

Thats a huge stash of diapers! So I am not sure about the smell after a week. Our stash will allow us to wash every other, every 3rd day depending on baby's age. Our newborn stash will be 8 covers and 24 fitteds. After that I'll have 24-36 preforlds, 8-10 covers, and 6 AIO's.
Yeah they supply the diapers, so I don't have to worry about buying them. If I don't go with the service, I'll of course buy my own diapers, but I definitely don't think I'd have enough on hand to launder just once a week!
One more question: The service I'm looking at delivers clean diapers and picks up dirty ones once a week. If i'm going through 8-10 diapers a day, that is a lot of dirty diapers to sit for a week. Is a smelly area around the pail (which they provide) inevitable? If I were washing them myself, could I go a week between loads (assuming I had enough diapers to get me through a week) or is that just gross?
That would be an enormous number of diapers to store. Our diaper pail holds about 30 diapers; what size pail do they provide? We usually wash once or twice a week, and the smell isn't terrible if you have a well-ventilated pail. If memory serves me correctly, our newborn diapers didn't stink very much. At least relative to toddler diapers.
Going to put the first Video from this 7 part series in here . . . it's a pretty good watch (even though it seems a few years old. She is talking about Bumgenius 3.0 when they have just released 5.0) I found it over in the FAQs from the cloth diaper board. Watching the full 7 parts really answered I didn't know I had.

This is the best one I've seen and what I started with, I highly recommend it!!
How many kids would a cloth diaper stash last before they wear out? With good maintenance
My friend gave me 10 BumGenious all-in-ones and pockets that she used with her first for a year. I was planning to add a few more (maybe 5?) Bumgenious or G-diapers to the stash to use with my LO and then pass them back to her for her 2nd. I'm wondering how many times we could do this before they wear out.
CDing becomes more cost effective if we can use them for more than one baby! But I'm not sure if the stash would last 4 kids if we were to each have 2.
I think they would last for four kids. A friend of mine had five kids. I can try to remember to ask her. Of course, she makes her own cloth diapers, so that was a plus for her.

I've been stalking my registries (I know, I know..) and it looks like someone purchased some covers, snappis, and a pail liner! So excited I just had to share

Depends on a few factors. The more you tumble dry, the more the elastics will wear out so air drying when you can helps. Also, not all diapers are created equally. I've heard that bum genius elastics relax faster than other brands so they may not fit small babies every well a few kids down the road, but you can replace the elastics for less than replacing the diapers.
My daycare won't accept CDs. It will be almost 9 months before he goes into this daycare. Is it bad in any way to do CD at the beginning and then switch?

Nope! I think lots of people switch to disposable after they start solids or because of daycare.
lionstigersbears thank you! I will remember to air dry & look to replace the elastic if need be - no idea that this was an option but that's awesome!

You're welcome!
Agree about cloth part time/limited time. DS doesn't seem to care about disposables, we switch between cloth and disposables for vacations with no issues.
@vinerie ask your daycare if they'll do disposable inserts. Some cloth diapers have inserts that you can purchase that are disposable and daycares that don't cloth diaper will often be okay with compromising and having disposable inserts.

Have you asked about all-in-ones with wet bags? It's no different than disposable, except that instead of throwing the used diaper in the trash they put it in the wet bag.
At the cloth diapering class I took, the teacher said that many daycares are only familiar with the prefolds and the insert variety and so are worried about mess, but if you show them the all-in-ones they usually agree.
I know you're planning on using the diaper service, with prefolds presumably, but buying a few all-in-ones for daycare would cut down on your need for disposables and would give you some flexibility in other settings (travel, etc).
worst case scenario, though, you can still CD whenever baby is not in daycare. As PP have said, it doesn't seem like it ever has to be all or nothing: most babies will be fine switching between cloth and disposable.
Anyone have their stashes set? I'm waiting on a few more diapers to come in still. This is just our one size diapers- Bumgenius Elementals and Freetimes. This is my first time using the Freetimes, they didn't have them when DD was in cloth, so we did the elementals and fitteds. They also didn't have all of these awesome colors before! We will be using sposies for a little bit, then prefolds and covers if needed for NB stage.

We have pretty much all of ours. I just need to prewash. I also need to order some prefolds, but I think I have a little time to do that.

Look at that gorgeous stash! We're only getting a couple AIOs to start (mainly due to cost) and have a bunch of prefolds with snappis and covers to begin.
Wow @jenl1681 !! I'm not gonna lie. I'm a little jealous of your stash. Like @littlebb22 we mostly have prefolds, snappis, and covers to start with. I'm just so unsure about how things will best fit or what will work for our lifestyle. MIL bought a huge newborn case set of gdiapers. I'm not a big fan but they were free so we will make them work.
My stash is basically ready to go. I have half prefolds and covers and half Best Bottoms AI2s. I just need to go through the intense first washing process!
We have about 10 AIO's with charcoal inserts, and tomorrow we're going to get 20 rumparoos infant size second hand. I think that should be enough for awhile, right?
We are also doing most prefolds, snappis, and covers. They just seem easier to me and if the cover isn't dirty you can use it twice. We also have pocket diapers and a couple of all in ones. My friend makes cloth diapers so she has made me two all in ones and one infant fitted. She is working for another diaper for us too. I have a whole bin full and then some. We're doing pocket diapers mostly for daycare, because I figure they'd be easiest for her to deal with.

@Charla1224 I do have the benefit of having used cloth before, so I already know exactly what I like and don't like, so that kinda helps! DD's stash changed A LOT in the beginning, we have tried a little bit of everything, and trying everything really helped to develop favorites, not just brands, but styles as well. I'm pretty fond of the snap on and go that an AIO gives you.
I'm all set with diapers too, both newborn and one size! Feels pretty good, as its about the only area I feel ready in, lol! I have 17 charlie banana newborn pockets that I got a great deal on (thank you, craigslist!), and 10 Kawaii pure and naturals. I'm thinking 27 pockets should be enough for a newborn, but this is my 1st time cloth diapering a newborn so we'll see! I will be reusing my daughter's bumgenius 4.0 one size and Kawaii goodnight heavy wetters when baby gets bigger. I think I have about 30 one size diapers, so we are all set! Also planning to try cloth wipes for the first time! I got 2 packs of Grovia cloth wipes, so we'll see how that goes. Anyone have tips or advice on using cloth wipes? Thanks!
Mostly all set up with our stash! We have 5 rumparooz G2, 2 bumgenius elemental, 1 bumgenius free time (in that super cute Albert print!), 8 bumkins (some are snap in one, some are stuff it's) for our one sized stash. Also some random off brand that was given to me that doesn't look like it will fit for a long long time. Haha.
And 14 kanga care lil joeys all in ones, 12 prefolds, and 2 newborn covers, and 3 snappis. We also have a few wet bags and a pail liner and sprayer.
I would still like to get a few more newborn covers (I think I'll wait and see how needed they are) and some one size covers to use with a tri folded prefold or possibly flats in the future.
Of all the mommy things I'm excited about, cloth diapering is definitely one of the things I'm most excited about!
Also all of the info in this thread has been super helpful in making decisions on what to get and how many and what not! Thanks experienced moms for your always valuable advice!

Cloth wipes are awesome! I use a mix of flannel and Bamboo Velour. If you think about it, it actually makes sense to use the cloth wipes with cloth diapers. We didn't at first and it was kinda gross to pick through and separate the disposable wipes-either you had to do it before the diaper went into the pail (which requires you to still have a garbage or the like) or you have to do it after, like when you are going to wash. With cloth wipes I just roll them up in the diaper and throw it all in the wetbag and then just wash.
For a wipe solution I just used the Peri bottle for the hospital-fill with water and add a few drops of whatever brand baby wash you use. Keep the dry wipes and bottle of wash right on the changing table and squirt when needed. Keeping pre-moistened wipes, gives the wipes that wet moldy towel smell.

So I'm a crazy diaper lady. We've cloth diapered DS since 1 week old and gone through a lot of changes of what we like at different stages.
I believe the newborn stash is 23 Blueberry newborn simplex, 9 covers (8 rumparooz newborn which we loved with DS! 1 newborn/size1 blueberry Capri which is that little mermaid print, I'm curious if I'll like it as much), not pictured are 24 flats for inside covers, as well as 10 size small GMD workhorse fitteds (loved them last time too!). The newborn simplex are all new for this baby because I developed a diaper buying problem
One size stash is...19? Blueberry one size simplex. Not pictured....an entire onesize stash that isn't specifically "girly" that we are using on DS. Okay I'm embarrassed. Ha!
Here's our newborn stash, a bunch of prefolds and and six covers. All Imagine brand - we'll figure out how we like those before we buy larger sizes. We still need to wash them!
@lionstigersbears your stash is awesome! We're Blueberry loyalists but never had a newborn stash with DS since we didn't figure out that Simplex was the only thing that would work for him until he was already too big for newborns. The few we had we gave away to a friend with a preemie. So now I'm building up our newborn stash and totally addicted. I think this weekend I spend about $200 in a BST group on newborn Simplex alone! I had to make myself go sort DS's old one-sizes to remind myself that we have a ton already. I'm totally in danger of becoming a crazy diaper lady, especially with so many new prints that have come out in the last 3 years!
@emma+karen I've heard that blueberry is the best but they are SO EXPENSIVE. Am definitely planning on getting a few for after the newborn stage but it will probably be a one at a time thing!
@littlebb22 they are super expensive, but worth it! If you join a BST group on Facebook (there's at least one big group specifically for Blueberry) you can often get used ones in great condition a bit cheaper--especially if you're not partial to the limited-edition prints--those can get pricey. But I got a bunch of newborns for much cheaper than retail and still in great condition!

Thanks! Same with us about missing the newborn simplex the first go around. Well not to be an enabler...but two new prints come out Friday (sea horses and diverse mermaids, woo!) and Wednesday 1pm EST they are having a grab bag sale (seconds quality but functional) on blueberryandme.com if you follow their fan group on FB you can get more details
If you join The Berry Patch: Fans of Blueberry Diapers on Facebook you are just in time for their grab bag announcement for this coming Wednesday--seriously discounted diapers, some seconds quality some just leftovers!

Thank you so much for this advice! I managed to get a grab bag of the mini-deluxe (my third choice but all of the nb simplex were sold out before I could even get them in my cart!)
Have any of you used the mini deluxe for your newborns? If so, how did you like them as compared to the AIO? How long did they fit your baby? Thanks again for the recommendation- that was a totally crazy experience but definitely worth it!
