So I called the Ped today bc baby has been spitting up half of what he's eating and gagging etc they said it could be reflux and to add a tablespoon to each bottle of pumped milk and see if that helps. I was told originally no solid foods until 6months...my mil is saying that he's to young as well. Has anyone ever done this or have thoughts?
I'm on the same instructions from my ped due to reflux. I started yesterday and I have noticed less spit up. I wouldn't call it "solids" so much as thicker formula.
I wouldn't do it. Rice and oatmeal aren't even recommended and their guts can't handle this. It's like a copout to the actual problem. I'm pretty anti meds but I'd put lo on medication before i did rice or oatmeal bottles.
I think reflux is pretty much the only time doctors recommend rice or oatmeal in bottles any more. Back in the day they used to say to do it to make babies sleep longer at night but that's not how it's done any more. Reflux it seems to help without putting them on mess from what I've read
They actually make a special formula called AR (added rice) for formula fed babies with reflux. So adding rice to breast milk would make sense for BF babies. My now 11 Year old DD had to have rice added when she was a baby due to extreme reflux and she also had to take Prevacid. Thickening the milk helped reduce the risk of aspiration.

We're using the AR formula and it does definitely help with the added rice starch, since it's thicker.
My ped. Has us doing the same thing. He has really bad reflux so he's on enfamil ar. My ped also said since I was breast feeding I can pump and had one tablespoon of rice cereal to each ounce.
Following to see what everyone's Peds say. I haven't addressed it with ours yet bc symptoms just started but I think my 7 week old LO has reflux as well. My husband had it as a baby and I'm guessing she inherited it. She spits up seems like all the time regardless of when she eats. I bottle feed breastmilk and have to continually pull the bottle out because she'll choke on it and I'm so scared she'll aspirate it. I would much rather her have a little cereal added then have to give her little body medication.
What nipples are you using with the thicker formula? I tried the size 1s that we have been using, and she cant get any. When i move up a size it seems she gets too much too fast and she spits up anyway. Totally defeats the purpose.
