Morning sickness

Has anyone ever heard the sicker you are, the healthier you are? I have never heard that and my boss keeps saying that to me. I am almost 9 weeks and have had no morning sickness at all. I consider myself a fairly healthy person, so am a little confused by what she's saying.

Re: Morning sickness

  • Never heard of such a thing.  I was what you would probably consider unhealthy my first pregnancy (all i wanted was cheetos and ice cream).  And wasn't sick at all.  This time I am healthier and way more sick.  This is probably "one of them wives tales" that I would ignore.

  • There have been a few studies that have shown that women who experience morning sickness are less likely to miscarry, have a baby with birth defects or deliver prematurely and tend to have babies with an overall higher IQ.  The numbers are barely increased and were more pronounced in women over age 30.

Essentially, if the baby is pumping out a ton of hCG, that means that they are growing well and the pregnancy is progressing.  If something is wrong, hCG increases less rapidly and doesn't cause as many, if any symptoms.  That being said, 15% of women don't seem to respond to hCG increases with morning sickness and that's totally normal for them (my mom was one of them and I'm obviously okay).

In the end, to me, it seems very similar to the "it's good luck for it to rain on your wedding day", it's an attempt to make people feel better about a kind of crappy situation.
  • I've heard it before and I am sick as a dog over here. I think people just say that though to make people like me feel better lol.

My close friend had zero morning sickness or cravings and went on to have a very healthy little girl. She's currently 11 weeks, healthy, and cute as a button!

  • My doctor told me it means a heathy placenta...lol I don't know if she was just trying to make me feel better!

Haha if I had any doubt I was still pregnant, the nausea definitely confirms I am. There's a plus...not really LOL
  • Haha and the rain on your wedding day comment. People told me that, ehhh they can have their good luck and rain. Thank god mine said torrential rain and it ended up being beautiful.
  • I'm so sick of hearing that.

When I was pregnant with my first, I had a cushy desk job and played WoW and ate pizza in my free time. Not healthy at all. I ended up so sick I missed a lot of work and ended up in the hospital a few times.

This time around, I was running 4 miles per day and eating healthy when I conceived. I'd consider myself healthy. Still really sick.

I don't think morning sickness has anything to do with how healthy you or baby are. I think some people get it and some don't. Simple as that. :)
