Baby Names

Full names for the NN "Kit"

One NN DH and I both like is "Kit" (our other two girls have very decidedly 1920-1930's popular names)

However, we do NOT want the full name Katherine, for personal reasons.

Any brainstorming that can be done on other full names we could us "Kit" with....OR, would "Kit" be an acceptable name on it's own. I struggle with this.

Re: Full names for the NN "Kit"

  • I wouldn't use it as a stand alone name. What about Katelyn?

  • I have a hard time with the nn thing too. I personally don't really get naming your child one name only to call them something else but I'm someone who goes by a nickname and I never really had a choice in it. For me, having a name with nickname options hasn't felt like a great benefit. I'd also worry that my LO would end up choosing a different nickname over the name that I wanted for them in the first place. A great example of this for me is that I love the name Theodore and think Teddy is an amazing nn but I absolutely do not like Ted. For that reason, I've ruled out Theodore. I know that I can't control who my child will be and they may not like their name. I'll support them in every way that I can to be their most authentic self even if that means changing their name but I'd rather start with a name I love and hopefully they'll love it too.

I personally like Kit as a standalone name.

    Apologies for the run-on sentences.
  • I think if you love Kit, and plan to call her that anyway, then Kit is a perfectly acceptable first name option. I believe there used to be an American Girl doll named Kit?
  • I don't think Kit makes a good given name. But honestly, all I can think of is Tale Spin.

Ooh wee ohh Tale spin, ooh wee aah Talespin, all the trouble we get in with another tale to spin.
  • Kit is NMS.  I've actually never heard it before and would assume it's a boy.

My daughter has the Kit Kittridge AG doll. All I can think of is Knight Rider, but I do like the name.
  • We actually got it from one of my favorite movies, A League of Their Own. Kit Keller, the pitcher.

Yes but the doll's name is actually Margaret Mildred Kittredge.

OP, for men, Kit is a NN for Christopher so maybe any feminine form of that like Christine, Christina, Kristin, etc.
  • I don't know, my name is Kristin and Kit does not seem like a natural nickname to me at all.

  • Kit seems like a boy's name to me. Maybe because I watch too much Game of Thrones and think of Kit Harrington.

I first heard Kit on the movie A League Of Their Own. She was a female baseball player. :)

  • Kit Keller was my immediate thought... Our dog is named Dottie :)
  • Kit as a given name has never been popular. For girls, it's most popular year was 1957 with 60 girls, and boys 1955 with 86. It has always been more popular for boys. It is a diminutive of Christopher or Catherine, so if Catherine is not an option perhaps a feminine form of Christopher would work for you. Many have been suggested already.
  • I've only ever heard of Kit as a nn for a male, as a diminutive of Christopher or Christian. I know a Kit and it's a great name. For girls/women usually the nn is Kitty.
