7 week old- how long are your babies sleeping stretches at night?

My baby is starting to only have one feed in the night for the past week or so. He goes to bed between 7-8pm and either wakes up
At 1 or 230 so having between 5-7 hour stretches during the first part of the night. Last night he asleep by 745 and he just woke now at 2:20. Is that okay? Seems like a long time ? He will wake again usually around 5-6 and then is usually up for the day .
I try to put him back into his crib after this feed and he crys. But never cries in the middle of the night. I'm just worries the stretches are too long? Anyone else in the same boat?

  • My LO is 7 weeks old and has just started doing 4.5-6 hour stretches at night. She has her last bottle around 10, we rock her to sleep and she's usually solidly asleep by 1030-1045 and she'll sleep until 330-5, then back to sleep until 830-10. I've been letting her do what she wants at night. I was a little hesitant at first because we had weight gain issues, but since she's steadily gaining and we're beyond birth weight I let her sleep. But during the day I will wake her up just to make sure she's getting enough to kind of make up for those longer stretches at night. Thankfully I've been blessed with a good sleeper!

  • Just enjoy the sleep! My seven week old still wakes up three times in the night and then is up for the day around six am. He started sleeping more and I thought we were progressing but the last four nights he seems to be regressing. I'd love 5-7 hours in a row!
  • @misgin1980 sounds like my 7 week old is on a very similar nighttime schedule. i think it can be normal for some babies. My first son was not this way so I am pleasantly surprised and trying to get to bed early to get some rest. I seem to have trouble falling asleep after the first feed which is frustrating because I could be getting quite a bit of sleep! Last night wasn't too bad but my really full boob woke me up at 5 for the day. Ahhh! Can't win even if the baby sleeps. Haha. I will take it though!
  • I think it's fine by then. I've noticed though day time or morning is kinda rough because they are making up for the feeds. By 7 weeks she had the occasional long stretch 4-6 hrs

My LO sleeps 9-10.5 hour stretches at night consistently now (I know--we are very lucky!) She is gaining weight and having a normal number of wet/dirty diapers so I let her sleep as long as her little body needs!

*Forgot to say she is 7 weeks old

    Same with me jweber!
  • Asleep for the night 9:30-10:30 (trying to make it earlier is just not happening!) usually a 4-6 hour then a 3-4 hour stretch. Up for the day around 7-8, but sometimes she'll go back for a 2-3 hour stretch right after she wakes up (she normally only naps 40 mins at a time).
  • My 7wk old will have her last feed at 10.30/11pm & will sleep right through till 8am. I don't wake to feed her because if she's hungry she will wake. She's been doing this from 5wks old.
  • I wish!!! My 7wk old is still getting up every 3hrs to feed. Last night was his longest stretch of 4hrs but then wouldn't go back down. He is usually asleep by 7pm and then up again every 3hrs like clock work. I'm hoping that he will start sleeping for longer periods at night as during the day he seems to be wide awake with very little to no naps.
  • Sounds similar to my LO :] She's 7 weeks as well. Last feeding is usually between 9 & 10 pm and then she'll typically sleep until 3 am. I'll nurse her and put her back down & she'll sleep until 5 or so. At that time if I bring her into bed with me she can sleep until 7 or 8 am most mornings. She's been on this schedule since 5 weeks... She's at a healthy weight so I'm just enjoying my sleep. Her naps during the day are not usually longer than 45 min.s unless I'm wearing her, then we can stretch them up to an hour and a half. No worries, mama as long as your LO is on track with weight gain he should be just fine.
  • Just out of curiosity, those of you who are bottle feeding and LO is sleeping 5 or more hour stretches how many ounces are they eating each feeding?
  • Our ped told us at 4 weeks we could stop waking him up at night to feed and let him wake us up. He was a very healthy height and weight at his appt (he's huge!) so she wasn't concerned about him not getting enough to eat. They just make up for it during the day.

Once we stopped waking him up at 4 weeks, he slept 5-6 hours straight, then was up to 8-10 hours straight by 8 or 9 weeks. He's regressed a little now at 10 weeks and is waking once or twice to eat, but he's in the middle of a (developmental) leap right now, so I'm not surprised. Hoping he goes back to sleeping through the night by the time I go back to work in a few weeks!
  • They say babies can sleep for as many hours as they are old (7 weeks=7 hours), so that's a good base to go on. Of course, my 8-week old hasn't slept 8 hours straight ever, but it's fine if they do! He usually sleeps from 10:30-2:30 and then from 3-6:30, then he usually falls back asleep until 9. We keep about a 2 1/2 hour feeding schedule during the day. I hope he starts skipping that middle of the night feeding soon!
