I am now 39 weeks and 4 days. My cervix is soft but closed. They tried the membrane sweep but could barely get in there. It was extremely painful and I bled after. Ever since, I have been having sharp pains in my cervix. Is that normal?
I only found membrane sweeping extremely painful when I wasn't ready and everything was pretty closed. That was a failed attempt at 39 weeks. At 40w2 days we tried again and there was absolutely no pain and she had an easy time with it. I went into labor the next day. I would definitely call your OB if you are having that kind of pain.

I had one at 39 weeks (last Friday) I still haven't gone into labor. It hurt extremely bad! And I had a lot of discomfort/shooting/pinching pains in my cervix for a couple days. I was 1+ dilated and about 90% effaced. She did the 360 sweep twice and then stretched me to a 2. Lost my mucus plug 2 days later and spotted (mostly brown) for 3 days... I will not be doing that again.
I had a membrane sweep on my due date. I was already close to 3 cm dilated and the doctor said that my cervix was favorable for labor. I thought the sweep was very painful, which surprised the doctor. Afterwards, she said that she had a good feeling that it would work. That whole day I had what felt like really bad menstrual cramps and bloody, slimy discharge (assuming it was my MP). Turns out I was in labor. I had my baby 13 hours after my sweep. I never really felt the contractions around my belly like I thought I would. They were all very low.
Had a very calm membrane sweep last week and a much more aggressive one yesterday.. I've been 70% and almost 3cm. I cramped all night but that's it. Feeling slightly discouraged but there is still time for it to work. If not I have another appointment tuesday!
I had my membranes stripped twice with my first pregnancy (once at 39 weeks, then at 40). I know I was already a few cm dilated and at least 50% thinned out. Needless to say it didn't work either time. BUT neither time was actually painful. Uncomfortable, yes. But nowhere near being painful. For about a day after each attempt, I just felt crampy and my cervix felt sore. But again, no pain. I'd call your OB. Could be normal but worth the call.
