Baby voices

So I know we all talk to babies in weird voices and do/say things when we are around them that otherwise would be deemed certifiably crazy..BUT when my dh talks to Lo, It makes me cringe. The voice he uses is unlike anything I've ever heard and I absolutely can't stand it!!! Anyone else have an experience like this or is it just me?!?

And side note, my dh also thinks it's totally acceptable to sit in front of the tv with Lo for hours. He works all day and then most nights goes to our new house and paints/gets things done, so I know when he has some free time he just wants to relax BUT our lives are not the same anymore and he doesn't seem to get that. One day, after a good 45 minutes of him sitting in front of the tv with her I was like you know she likes to do other things than watch tv. He looked at me like I had 6 heads before asking me what she likes to do. After rattling off a bunch of things he continued to sit there with her, so I went up and got a bunch of toys and books out of her closest, put them on the couch next to him and turned the lights the whole way up. He still didn't get it. It makes me so mad. I'm not one that won't let her watch tv at all, but if i do let her watch it's when me nephews are here and have kid friendly shows on, not ones with guns and violence or football. Sorry rant over :)

Re: Baby voices

  • My MIL and my mom use voices that upset me all the time!!! I have go literally step out of the room and breathe to not say anything inappropriate. I feel ya!
  • Loading the player...
  • I hate baby talk. It doesn't help baby development. My MIL does it and I wanna slap her. But I have other problems with her too.

My DH works hard and allows me to stay home so I feel bad about not letting him sit and relax. But he is pretty good about playing with her even a little bit. He has even gotten her to giggle while I haven't be able to...
  • My MIL has this really high pitched, yet raspy voice that she uses with DD. I swear it will one day make my ears bleed!!!
  • If you lo is anything like ours she loves watching football. Our lo will bout break her neck to watch football, I let that be a daddy daughter bonding experience I just try to get him to explain it to her. I understand not wanting lo watching lots of TV though.
  • My MIL. One of the last times we went to see them LO wouldn't smile at her only my FIL. She would be upset and say to her husband "you talk to her she doesn't like it when I Talk to her". Lol. I can't blame her it sounds like nails on a chalk board to me.
  • I just hate baby talk. I feel like it will make my kid dumb. Pretty everyone but DH and me talk to LO using baby talk though. I guess I just have to hope she listens more to us!
  • There is a lot of conflicting information about baby talking helping or hindering speech. Some say it will help a child's speech and other say it can hinder it. I never talked baby talk with my first DS and he did not talk until later and I was constantly having to translate his words for people. He is 5 now and talks perfectly and says words that are very large for a 5 year old vocabulary. But now with DS2 I am talking baby talk more, I kind of just want to see if there is a difference. But this is hard too because DS was not very vocal as a baby and now DS 2 babbles constantly so I don't know if it is a fair trial.
  • My DH and I baby talk, talk normal, make silly sounds, talk in a deep voice, and probably more I can't think off the top of my head. I really don't think that baby talk will hinder your LO's development or ability to talk. I've done it with all my little nieces and nephews and they all excel in school. In fact, when I say a "babyish" word that they used to say, they correct me! Lol

I'm sure if all your LO is exposed to is baby talk, then that might be a different story. But my LO hears me talk "normal" to everyone else all day, so I'm sure she is going to be just fine.

I don't mind when others baby talk to her. What I do mind is when others say cuss words. Luckily, that's hasn't happened around her yet!

I usually end up spending an hour before bedtime cooing back and forth with LO. We go back and forth matching sounds. My husband is always asking us what the hell we're doing but I love our conversations. I'll also then review his day with him, like "What did you do at Grandma's? Really? What about the cat? Well that's a silly cat!" and my husband and I have a lot of political discussions so LO hears that as well. Hopefully it's a good mix he's being exposed to.

Side note, pretty sure LO said "agua" the other day. Neither of us speak Spanish so obviously the kid is a genius...

Lol that was my son's "first" word also! Then he said abue which Is short for grandpa. Still hoping his first official word is mama tho
