No heart rate on Doppler?

So I'm 10w2d and I cannot find the heart rate on my home Doppler. I went to the dr on Tuesday and the baby was bouncing around wiggling what little arms he/she has and had a heart rate of 188. Should I be concerned or am I just being a creep? Also what is everyone's take on ultra sounds. There's a place I can go to and pay to have 3D done but I've had a few from the dr already 2 times at the ER. I think I'm just a worry wart

Re: No heart rate on Doppler?

  • My ob couldn't find the heartbeat on the doppler at my 10w1d appointment but it was there when we looked during the ultrasound. I wouldn't worry about it. =]

  • My ob didn't even do a doppler at my 10w1d appointment because she said it was very likely that she wouldn't be able to find it with the doppler she had this early and she didn't want to freak me out.  This was my first appointment too.  But she did do a transvaginal ultrasound and we could see the heart flickering so that was good enough for me.

  • With my first I had a home doppler but couldn't find the heartbeat myself until around week 20 or so. Always just picked up my own.

  • I've read that with dopplers it can be difficult until 11 wks and isn't a concern. If it take longer than that it could be Bc the placenta is in the front which muffles the sound. Not hearing anything on an at home Doppler isn't an indication of anything concerning. :)
  • I've never had a doctor try the Doppler before 11 weeks because it's very hard to pick the hb up. I wouldn't worry at all

My L&D nurse friend has a Doppler that she offered to let me borrow. Since I'm such a worrier she won't let me borrow it until after 15 weeks because it's really hard to find it that early.

Finding the heartbeat on doppler depends on
    1. The skill of the person operating it
    2. The size of the embryo/fetus, and
    3. How much fat is between the skin and the uterus
    4. A little bit of luck
An experienced operator can find it on a skinny person as early as 9 weeks, but change any of those variables and that goes out the window

ETA: also I have a sneaking suspicion the home dopplers people buy aren't as good as the pro ones
