Anyone not gaining weight in their 4th month?

Before pregnancy I was a bit heavier. Within 6 weeks of being pregnant I lost 13 lbs without even trying. I didn't have full on MS, but I couldn't eat at all and was queasy for most of the time. Now that I'm in my 2nd trimester I feel better and have more energy, but at 18 weeks I thought I would start gaining weight back already. My last OB appt was early Oct and the doctor wasn't concerned (I'm not seeing her until mid Nov). I'm just wondering if it's also common to not gain until much later.

Re: Anyone not gaining weight in their 4th month?

  • Im at 15 weeks and Ive lost 14 lbs (116lbs at week 6 to 102.5lbs at last appt) but I've had really bad morning sickness (still do). My ob wasn't super concerned but did say I have some catching up to do.

  • At 16 weeks I had only gained a pound, you're not the only one not gaining very much weight. My doctor was also not concerned/didn't mention it. There is still a lot of time to slowly put on the baby weight.
  • I'm 20 weeks tomorrow, and I still haven't gotten back to my starting weight, although I've gained back two pounds
  • When you look at the breakdown of where the weight gain comes from, like how much the placenta weighs, amniotic fluid, extra blood etc, not a lot is fat. I'm 18 weeks and just now am starting to gain but I'm also starting to show. So I feel like just keep eating as normal and your body will automatically gain as your baby grows and the pregnancy moves on. Make sense? Don't feel like you have to eat your way to that 25-35 pounds.

    Baby due April 6!
  • I'm 15 weeks with number 2 and am still at zero. I did lose like 2 lb (nothing significant) and gained it back but I don't know if that counts. Perhaps your stomach shrunk and you're eating less and healthier than pre pregnancy? If you're eating when hungry and stopping when full, and started over weight, it's actually "okay" for some women to not gain any weight during pregnancy if that makes sense. I know a girl who is overweight and she actually loses weight during pregnancy because she has had GD in both pregnancies and it forces her to eat well etc. obviously her dr is monitoring her and baby etc.

I don't know what "a bit heavier" is as far as weight, but I can assure you that you are not the only one losing weight. Because this is the 2nd time for me and I have been overweight for both pregnancies, I'm not stressing my weight loss. This pregnancy I started at 318 lbs when I was 7 weeks. I am down to 299 lbs now. I just had my 16 week appointment with my OB on Tuesday and she is fine with the weight loss. The last time I was pregnant I ended up losing 70+ lbs and I weighed over a 100 lbs less at the beginning of that pregnancy than what I did at the beginning of this one.  As long as your doctor is fine with the growth of baby you really have nothing to worry about, BUT if it is really worrisome to you or you suddenly lose a crazy amount of weight in a week or less, call your doctor. There is never any harm in calling and getting some reassurance or an expedited appointment if necessary. That is my two cents anyway.

  • Thank you for your responses.

I was 163 and am now 150 and have been for the last 15 weeks. Glad to hear it's common enough to not gain right away. I'm not complaining, when I gain later I will have a bit less to lose after baby!
  • Started at 128 pre pregnancy. Now at 16 weeks I am 130. Doctor didn't mention anything about being concerned. I am starting to pop though.
  • I'm 18 weeks now and had not gained any til last week. Then by week 17 gained 1 pound, and this week gained 2. My doc said it was normal and warned me that often the weight comes on quickly and out of the blue.
  • I haven't gained any yet. I didn't start gaining until second tri with DS either and ended up gaining 50 lbs so I know it could start any time.
  • I'm 17 weeks and have gained less than a pound. My mom said she didn't gain much weight early during her pregnancies either, but the little she did gain was quite a bit later on. I'm just waiting for it. Everyone is different!
  • I haven't gained any yet and I'm 17 weeks today. I lost 15lbs since I got pregnant due to severe all day sickness. I was sick from week 5 to week 15. My appetite is now ravenous but I haven't gained any weight back yet....probably because the baby is taking everything I'm eating lol
  • I'll be at 20 weeks on Sunday, and have been floating between 170-176 this entire time. I weighed today and was 174. I'm not that worried about it since I'm really starting to shape into more of a bump vs just a gut, and I really can't afford to gain a lot of weight anyway. (High risk of gestational diabetes) I knew going into it that I can't indulge in the eating for two fantasy at all, and as long as I'm not feeling hungry, I'm fine with it. Now if I haven't gained at all by this time next month I might worry...
  • I've only lost a few lbs, but have not gained any. If you eat healthy and exercise, you should gain what you need to.
  • I'm in the same boat. I've lost about 15 pounds and gained back maybe 2. I just don't care to eat as much or I can't hold much before I get full! Doctor doesn't seem concerned either. I am a little bit over weight so I think that is why they aren't concerned as of right now. I had a friend who weighed less at birth than before she got pregnant because as she gained weight she was losing it too.

  • I had lost a pound at my appt at 13 weeks, but I think I'm starting to get a little bit of a tummy now at 15 weeks. The first trimester is rough. Don't sweat it yet!

I'm 16 weeks with baby 4 and I've only gained 1 pound. If you dr isn't concerned I wouldn't worry. Everyone is different. This is standard for me in regards to my previous pregnancies. In total I gained 30 with my first, 25 with my second and 25 with my third.
  • I haven't yet but today I wanted to eat all the things do it must be right around the corner.

Yes! I had only gained a pound at 14 weeks. Between 14 and 18, I packed on 6 pounds, most of which happened in a 2 week period. It freaked me out a bit. In the last week, I have maintained.
  • I have gained a few pounds. I would be okay with not gaining any at this point since I started with a little extra around the middle!
  • I'm in the same boat, no weight gain for me but I definitely have a cute bump going. It's insane what your body is capable of, I'm still amazed at what's happening inside of me <3

  • At my 16 week check in I had lost 10 lbs... didn't really have MS in the first tri though. I think a huge part of mine is the smaller meals throughout the day that have helped with nausea and just my appetite in general ...  metabolism just stays more active and seems to be a healthier way of eating.
  • me: 117 @ 13 week appt
    121 @ 17 week appt
  • With my son I weighed 122 pounds before I got pregnant ( Im using this for reference as he is only 6 months old ... lol ) and the day before I had him I was 158. I lost most of it afterward and weighed 133.

Now I'm into my 4th month and I have only gained 1 pound. With my son I was in normal range by this time. Hmm.

*I had absolutely no morning sickness with either baby*
  • I'm 19 weeks, and although I lost weight in the first trimester I'm at an overall gain of 5.4 lbs. I've been at the same weight for 3 weeks. I have a bump, my pants don't fit and I need maternity pants but the scale won't move. I eat normally and fairly healthy, I don't skip meals, I walk every day... I'm sure it will catch up later. most of the weight you are supposed to gain is baby related and not fat gain, so fluid, baby, extra blood, etc. your placenta weighs 2 lbs. so I feel like we should not turn to ice cream just yet ;)

I can attest to this statement. I unfortunately am one of the ones that packed them on early and NOW the weight is slowly adding on. Some women gain it early some women gain it at the end.

That said, I feel like a whale.
