Trying to Get Pregnant

Anyone with heartburn after quitting Birth Control?

Hi Everyone!

I quit my birth control about three weeks ago. After the first couple of days, I developed pretty bad heartburn for a few days in a row. I'm taking prilosec and it's definitely helping. My diet hasn't changed and I'm hoping this is just hormonal as my body readjusts.

I'm just wondering if anyone else experienced heartburn shortly after quitting the pill. Did it go away after your first few cycles?

Re: Anyone with heartburn after quitting Birth Control?

  • Could be an adjustment or could also just be coincidence. Does it come after particular foods?

  • It didn't happened to me but ask your pharmacist about taking Prilosec while TTC. Was told by my doctor that pantoprazole (similar med) is a big No No

I don't have experience with heartburn after stopping BC, but I do get heartburn between the time I ovulate and when AF comes. Sometimes during AF as well.  I never get it any other time, so it absolutely may be hormonal.  Your body can take a while to adjust and regulate after BC, so you may notice some new symptoms going on related to that.  I wouldn't worry about it too much at this point, but definitely monitor it because if it continues you may want to speak with your doctor about it.  Heartburn/acid reflux can cause long-term issues if not treated.

  • Thanks for the insight! We're not TTC just yet. I figure we would wait a few months before really trying. I definitely will not be taking Prilosec during that time.

I had a long discussion with my doctor because I take Nexium (same family of meds) and I really can't go off of it - it's a legit, long-term medical issue. She said there's no long-term studies that show any negative effects on conception or the possible baby, and that if I can't, can't, and if I don't conceive we'll consider it later.

Yes! I have never had heartburn in my life before. The month I went off the pill I was CONVINCED I was dying. .  I didn't eat any differently than I had the month before.

DH laughed at me and handed me tums. Which fixed the issue *blush*

  • I was never had heartburn in my life before and since stopping my birth control I get in around the time AF is supposed to show. It not something that happens every month, so I'm guessing there is some sort of food that triggers it I just haven't figured out what.
